Will anybody really challenge Thompson at SS?

I think Thompson would need to really struggle to be bumped from SS, but if he struggles and a guy like Simon or Merrifield is playing well, I could see him being replaced.

I don't anticipate that happening though. I think Thompson is going to be one of the biggest benefactors of the new coaching staff.

Berry may get a shot at the field, but he's your DH at the very least or maybe 1B if you have someone else you feel HAS to hit. Here's what you could do:

Gio - CF
Morgan - LF
Crews - RF
Berry - 1B
Dugas - 2B
Doughty - 3B
???? - DH
Milazzo/McManus - C
Thompson - SS

or

Morgan - 1B
Crews - RF
Berry - DH
Dugas - LF
Doughty - 3B
Thompson - SS
???? - 2B
Milazzo/McManus - C
Gio - CF

Does anyone realistically think Berry is going to be 3B over Doughty? Surely, Berry can move to 2B with that terrible fielding %

No idea but it's not like Doughty was a hot shot 3rd baseman himself. I think things will work themselves out between Berry and Doughty and 2nd/3rd, with Merrifield being a potential thorn in that plan though. Worst case there if Merrifield wins 2B job, Doughty or Berry play 3rd and the other DH's. Maybe even Berry plays 1B if Morgan moves to OF. There's honestly a lot of combinations to go with and considering so much is still up in the air it's hard to see where a lot of things can go. Fall practice should be fun.

He played very seldom at 3B a year ago but I'm sure Johnson sold him on the whole you need a position for the draft so nothing would surprise me.

To add to this as long as Will Hellmers never plays 3B again I'll probably be alright with whatever direction they go there.

I've erased this from my mind. It didn't actually happen.

As some of the crazy things Mainieri has done in the past, this is one that convinced me this was probably it for him this year

I wonder if Johnson is going to tinker like Mainieri did?

My guess is he will actually evaluate more and stick more to his decisions.

I’m in no way a Paul apologist but I doubt he told him, “hey, can you take less walks and strikeout as much as possible?”

Dude looking at the numbers Johnson and staff have difficult job. I mean if trends continue they will likely tell some freshman to go JUCO. The may tell bianco, Beloso, gio, Cranford, and Safford that you’re not going to get at bats so you’re gone. I see them trying to keep as many pitchers as possible. Like I see the roster being like 22 P’s and 18 Position guys
Travinski and Sanford sucks to get hurt but they may roll out. In my opinion I’m telling Cranford to walk on, Sanford, Beloso, and Safford. They’re not bringing berry, or McManus to ride the pine.

You complained about an aggressive approach. That was an across the board expectation from the head coach. And if you struggle, he doubles down and wants you to be more aggressive. That’s not going to work for everyone.

Its not even debatebale, lsu’s hitters have been aggressive and mostly over aggressive as long as mainieri was here, it was his philosophy

The only guys who were patient came in with a patient approach, like morgan

He obviously didn’t want them to strikeout but even if you ignored the trend for the last decade he finally said in an interview this year that he would prefer to see less walks and strikeouts.

The strikeouts this year were the result of an inexperienced, anxious lineup coupled with an aggressive approach that wants to force action early because it is afraid to fall behind in counts.
