quote:

All government officials in Qala-e-Naw, provincial capital of Badghis province, had been moved to a nearby army base, the local governor told the BBC.

He said the militants were moving "towards the centre of the city" and there was heavy fighting with government troops.

quote:

Local sources told the BBC the Taliban moved on the prison in Qala-e-Naw and freed about 400 inmates, including more than 100 of the group's fighters.

Afghan forces guarding the prison are reported to have surrendered without a fight.

quote:

The Taliban have seized dozens of districts in recent weeks and are now thought to control about a third of the country, making new gains on a daily basis. So far provincial capitals have remained under government control.

Under a deal with the Taliban, the US and its Nato allies agreed to withdraw all troops in return for a commitment by the militants not to allow any extremist group to operate in the areas they control.

But the Taliban did not agree to stop fighting Afghan forces, whose ability to hold off the insurgents is being questioned.

quote:

President Ashraf Ghani insists that Afghan security forces are fully capable of keeping insurgents at bay, but more than 1,000 Afghan troops have fled over the border to Tajikistan in recent days, and there have also been reports of more soldiers seeking refuge in Pakistan and Uzbekistan to escape the fighting.

I've also seen reports of Afghan government soldiers defecting to the Taliban with their weapons.

I also read a story about the country's new professional class that was able to grow up under the relative safety of US protection. They are starting to leave the country.

I know I'm about to get a bunch of "who cares, frick 'em" type replies. But, I didn't grow up during Vietnam, so I find this somewhat parallel type of disaster incredibly interesting.

Not our problem?

I really don't know enough about the situation to have an opinion.

Unless we were going to be there forever, all roads were going to lead to this.

on one hand, if I had a son/daughter that died fighting over there I would be livid that we are letting it go. On the other hand these retards have fought for 100's of years and aren't stopping anytime soon so who cares.

IF they surrender without a fight, then they don't care if the Taliban is controlling.

Hard truth.

Anyone that's ever studied history knows this. This was always going to end this way.

Tribalism is their nature, their base. You will never overcome that nature.

Well, you can, but it will take generations of hand holding and training, much like dogs were domesticated. It would take 100+ years. They've been fighting forever; they will never stop on their own.

Try thousands of years. We should have gone in, killed the dudes that needed killing and got the frick out. History is quite clear that staying in that place just costs men and money. Fly by and bomb the hell out of the bad guys every now and then just to keep them off balance.

so let me get this straight . A bunch of Muslim men surrendered to an army and government who

1)believe in women being second class citizens and having to service their husband anytime he needs it
2) believe that all Muslims of Afghanistan are superior and everyone else needs to die

Ya don’t say.

Yeah, but some higher ups probably got some nicer, bigger houses in fancy suburbs as a result of this war.

The area is devoid of basic natural resources necessary for modern human life and everyone is sexually repressed/absolutely insane bc of their religion, so its not crazy that they want to get their rocks off fighting and killing each other under the premise they will go to heaven and have infinite virgins, since life on Earth sucks so bad for these people. They have been fighting for thousand of years before the US got involved, and will be fighting for thousands of year into the future. The US getting involved with their BS was an enormous mistake and I cannot believe it spanned 4 presidents. Sad. Imagine how the country could have better spent nearly a trillion dollars than blowing up a bunch of civilians in Afghanistan for 20 years

quote:

The Defense Department’s latest 2020 report said war-fighting costs totaled $815.7 billion over the years. That covers the operating costs of the U.S. military in Afghanistan, everything from fuel and food to Humvees, weapons and ammunition, from tanks and armored vehicles to aircraft carriers and airstrikes.

quote:

About 241,000 people have been killed in the Afghanistan and Pakistan war zone since 2001. More than 71,000 of those killed have been civilians.

quote:

A total of 2,312 US military personnel in Afghanistan have died and 20,066 have been wounded since 2001. The number of civilian deaths in Afghanistan range from 35,000 to 40,000, while the cost of military operations is put at $824bn.
