Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) no more enjoys liability protection against user-generated content in India as the U.S. microblogging giant has failed to comply with new IT rules, the Indian government said in a court filing.

The statement is the first time Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration has officially said Twitter has lost its immunity after repeatedly criticising the company for non-compliance.

India's IT ministry told the High Court in New Delhi that Twitter's non-compliance amounted to a breach of the provisions of the IT Act, causing the U.S. firm to lose its immunity, according to the filing dated July 5.

The only possible thing this results in is Twitter taking a more active stance against conservative voices and folks that are critical of governments.

I hate Twitter, Facebook, et al, as much as the next guy, but if Twitter is liable for the shite that gets posted on their platform, I'd imagine that immunity wouldn't be given to Chicken in the same situation for TD.

I dont see chicken censoring 1/2 of the country. Maybe i am in the wrong rooms/threads.

His rules are pretty basic message board rules. This is a public forum.

I dont see the correlation of the secrant/tigerdroppings to twitter.

Unless I am misreading this, doesn't this mean India is demanding Twitter do MORE censoring of their users content? We need less of that in this country.

Not sure how Twitter and Facebook ever received this immunity in the first place. The world would be a better place without both platforms.

So I guess this introduces the possibility that Jack Dorsey could be called to Indian court to defend posts about "one foot pineses" and "veganas."

Why in the world would you want our government to engage in this type of regulation, censorship, and forcing of private companies to expose user identities?
