The GF is getting a dog on Monday. This'll be my first one. Unfortunately we didn't get to have one growing up so I've never really raised one from a puppy. Anything I should know or expect? I'm excited and can't wait to bring her home.

It's a King Charles Cavalier if that matters at all.

Obviously no play time with pitbulls

ETA: I'm about to load up on treats/food/toys for it to have at the apartment and was also wondering if it really matters what I get or anything to potentially stay away from.

Let it sleep in your bed from day 1.

Spend time with it, feed it and walk it. Nothing more needed

Balls are my pups favorite toy. Along with his dart

Don't let it sleep with you, no matter how much it whines.

That's not a real dog.

On a serious note, I think they are prone to heart disease.

If it's a house dog get it fixed, boy or girl.

It will save you a lot of headaches

This. Consistency is key with training dogs. Work with them as often as you can, but for not too long. When their attention is gone be done, but get back at it as soon as you can.
