I trusted Skip, and I will say that I think it was a good hire. He had a lot of success and he did win a National Championship after all. I just feel that his time here has gotten stale. I wish him nothing but the best and hope that he will remain a vital part of the LSU family.

Honestly nobody knew who he was......same with Dinardo and Saban..... we just went with it. It worked out for the most part.....

I remember him getting Notre Dame to the CWS, didn't really know about his La connections. I suspected it would be a good hire, because at that time I felt like LSU was treating baseball like Alabama treats football now (as in, give them everything they need to stay on top). Felt like PM had been successful with way less resources, that he'd blow things up here with what we'd provide.

Overall, it's a bit disappointing to see how he basically coasted, while South Carolina and Vanderbilt elevated their programs above ours. He didn't suck, but he also didn't dominate.

I think with the right guy, we could return to dominating... but that window is closing soon. If it's not this next guy, I don't think we return to the top of the SEC.

I was underwhelmed. I didn’t come here back then though, so not sure.

Michigan St. was a top 10 team the year before and we’d played them in a bowl game 5 years before. If you didn’t know who Saban was you were clueless.

I didn’t know DiNardo by name or sight, but I knew Vandy had been improved.

Well was was the general consensus among LSU fans?

Every consensus is general. That’s what the word means. “General consensus” is redundant, and it’s like waving a flag that says you are barely literate.

College baseball exposure in 2007 vs today is almost completely different. Before the SEC Network you only had a few games a year on tv. And even some of the regionals/Supers were not on television. So the knowledge of an incoming coach was very limited.

The Rant was unanimous about getting rid of Smoke.

Yea....Skip left Smoke with the talent to win at least a title (probably 2) and he didn't....I think everyone, including Skip, knew that and regretted the hire nearly immediately. 2 and Q in 03 and 04 were deflating for the program.

Im sorry, I can easily see how the college football world would be generally unaware of this coach at Mich State

Most posters were optimistic. Once he got here he rubbed some of the current players parents the wrong way and they posted here starting the long running hate of paul. I assumed it was relatives of players that werent retained for the following year like robert lara and jt wise and jared bogany

I remember a bunch of guys turning down job like Corbin and Bianco. Although LSU media is now claiming they turned Corbin down. Pretty sure there was more than that. PM came out of nowhere.

He definitely rubbed Smoke's players the wrong way....I was good friends/coworkers with some of the guys from 03-06....they hated Maineri from day 1 when he took over....I was always of the opinion that we should give him a chance. I will give Maineri this credit he saw the "disease" that Smoke and his ways had put into the program and from day 1 did what he had to do to get it out....it wasn't a task that made him friends but it was necessary and I commend him for that for sure.

Those feelings over time waned with those guys and they got behind Maineri as a whole (winning cures all)....although they were some of his biggest critics to this day on some of his boneheaded coaching moves.

All I care about at this point in a coach is his name is simple enough for the dumbasses on this site to be able to spell his fricking name correctly

Bianco, Horton and Corbin all turned down the job. He was at best the 4th choice

Pawlowski from Charleston was a big name thrown around too. He ended up flaming out at Auburn a couple years later.

It definitely wasn’t a OMG Grandslam hire but it felt like a solid hire and a fit

Hopefully we can look at this weekend's Bianco hire as rationally.
