I always thought it was wild there is a United States Supreme Court case literally allowing the nepotism in the river pilot community.

Should have gone higher when they asked for car allowance money to get to work because $600,000 + a year just don't hack it nowadays.

What’s the favorite career path?
For a river pilot?
From the testes, through the vas deferens to the prostate, where you mix with seminal fluid and then are expelled through the urethra and out the glans of the penis during an ejaculation.

Crescent pilots still use it.

They only thing that would make sense is that they are asking to charge more money to these private companies.
That's exactly what they do. All of the fees are regulated.

the vessel owners are the ones who should be throwing a bitch fit over the prices of this service!
Oh, they do, all the time... and they are bankrolling these legislative efforts.

Wondering why a Shreveporter gives two flying fricks about port pilots? Any port pilot issues in Shreve?

Not really news. I'm now 68 and every year or two the River Pilots come under fire for their nepotism in hiring practices and how it's pretty much closed off to any minorities, although a few have made their way into the ranks over the last few years to kind of throw water on the coals so to speak.
I know a young man who is around mid 30's now and he's making that half million a year as a River Pilot. Not a bad gig if you have an in, like a dad or uncle who are talking up for you.

I have no issue with the pilots making as much money as they can. That's life.
I'm ok with requiring pilots to be used.
I'm even ok with having a regulated monopoly.
But... anyone who can qualify for a license should be able to get a commission. And the rates should be approved by a broader group of people.
It would be as if the public service commission said, hey Entergy, you are now approved to charge 25x higher rates. Because, why not.

Maybe due to what’s coming in. A lot of tankers are diverting to Mobile and Houston because they say frick those fees. That’s a lot of money not going to the states coffers

Good. No logical reason that profession should be a birthright. Nepotism at it’s finest.
It's the leftist's way.

It's a big reason the port industry on the Mississippi river and hence all of Louisiana has suffered and declined while other ports (Houston) have prospered
They are leeches

All you need to know about this organization is that John Bel Edwards made John Alario's son, who himself is a river pilot, one of the "Examiners" of the "Board of Examiners" for the river pilots.
Literally, everything that is wrong with this organization, and our state government, is encapsulated right there in those facts.

Are you a pilot or a retired pilot?
No one is suggesting they be "legislated out of a job".
Again, just use the same rules other states use.

Therefore they have to pay their outrageous fees.
Considering that freight and shipping are pro-rated into the cost of the product, then in reality the end-user / consumer is indirectly paying the outrageous fees.

Because ship traffic moving to Houston or mobile affects the whole state and not just plaquemines parish.
