Wife’s 40th Birthday Trip

I’m trying to plan a surprise 40th trip for my wife. Her #1 choice would be Broadway but not sure I want to bank a trip including shows being available in NYC. Not to mention I’m not terrible interested in spending my money in that state at this time.
Anyway, my parameters are the continental US and preferably no beaches. I’m looking for like a four or five day trip, can drive or fly. There is not much she doesn’t like. Shows, outdoors, wine. It’s all available. We had kids young, and still have young kids which is why we’re limited on time. But we are at the age where we want to experience some trips on our own. This will be our first real one since our honeymoon. Next year we are planning a trip to Italy.
Anyway, what are your thoughts on best 4-5 day adult trips in the US? Any time of year is available.

Not sure your budget, but I'd look into Blackberry Farms. It's pretty pricey, but would likely check a lot of boxes.

Looking for a single location, or willing to fly then drive?
For my wife's 30th, we went to Chicago for 3 days, drove to Cedar Point for a day, stopped in Detroit to see the Yankees play (Jeter's last year and she was/is in love with him), then did 2 days in Niagara. We ended up in Pittsburgh because the flight was cheaper back home, but didn't really do the tourist thing.
We've been considering a similar trip along the East Coast and train hoping starting in DC, going to Annapolis, Philly, NY and maybe a few other places on the way.
Also had a relative fly into AZ and rent a vehicle to check out the Grand Canyon, Vegas (outdoor life not casinos), spent time hiking in mountains in Cali, and finished in Napa. Don't know where they flew back from.

Chicago in lieu of NYC is an option, if she wants a big city feel with lots of options.
Or maybe Portland, OR with a side trip to Wlamette Valley wineries?

You’re right. Too convoluted.

I’m really curious now. $1500-2500 a night for accommodations which I think includes food. But what are we getting here? I’m not saying it’s not worth it, just want to know. Great suggestion though.

Maine and Niagara are places I've seen people go before.
Can't go wrong with Sedona (sequoia/SF).
Not sure how outdoorsy, but Yellowstone and Yosemite are great.
Nashville was a fun 3 day trip. Plenty of grown-up things to do.
Depending on her tastes, going to Charleston or Palmetto Bluff might be fun.
Just had a friend get back from Vegas, and he hated it. He's been several times and said currently, it's not a good time to go.

40th? Needs to be something special!
Nashville was mentioned and I'd echo it can be a fun trip. Lots of threads here. While you're in the State, you could visit the amazing (and expensive) Blackberry Farm!
We had an amazing trip in the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Plenty of outdoor stuff to do. Stayed at the Lake Crescent Lodge.
You might not think about it, but Traverse City in Michigan is spectacular (Weather dependent and time of year of course). Hiking. Fishing. Big Bear Dunes National Park. Tubing. Kayaking. Great dining options. Winery tours.
Big Sur in California is spectacular. Check out the Ventana Inn. Plenty of hiking in the area. Wine tasting. Visit Carmel. Beautiful area of the country.

Just a heads up as I’ve seen this mentioned as a suggestion a couple of times recently. Looked into Blackberry Farms last night and it is almost completely booked until the end of the year with a couple of rare exceptions in November and December. Even January and February 2022 are filling up. Basically if you’re looking to stay at Blackberry for next year, book it now.

People keep rec'ing Blackberry Farms, and I absolutely cannot appreciate the place at its pricing point. Location isn't THAT scenic, for sure.
If you're splashing out on that sort of budget, definitely Big Sur or Carmel over Blackberry Farms on sunsets alone.

I don't get it either. Sure, it's pretty, but it's still Tennessee. That's not a knock on TN at all, but at that price point, you can see some of the most amazing scenery the USA has to offer & more.

Don't disagree, but friends that have been there loved it. Food. Service. Yeah, you'd better be pampered for that price. Not my cup of tea. Up to the OP to assess the value or not. Very popular place either way.
If and when you can get into Canada, I'd say Vancouver Island would top all. We stayed at Sooke Harbour House. Spectacular views. World class restaurant on premise.
Emerald Lake Lodge in Alberta may be even more spectacular.

I've actually never been, but the people I know that have been raved about it. It's not entirely the scenery, they raved about the service, food, and amenities.
I probably wouldn't pay the prices they charge myself.

Blackberry Farms is very high end. Spending that kind of money is all relative if that's what you like. They have activities you can do as well - trap shooting, horseback riding, fly fishing, canoeing, etc.
If she likes wine, try Napa or Sonoma or even somewhere like the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Lots of airbnb options and B&B's in those areas.

This isn’t hard. It’s a trip for your wife. Bring her to her #1 spot she wants to visit.

Yes. We went there a few years ago around Thanksgiving. Stayed at the Banff Springs Hotel. Chateau Lake Louis. Then there. Was already snowing and they were skiing. We got to watch the lake literally freeze over while we were there. Really beautiful location.

Agree with this. If she has a number 1 trip and you can swing it, then go to New York.
I for one live New York City. There is just so much to do and I think the city is going to be popping over the next year. Even if Broadway isn’t back there a thousand different worthwhile things to see and do in and around NYC.
