Old timers, why did lsu hire Gerry dinardo?

Let me start out by saying that Dinardo did some good things here, mainly getting the instate recruiting back and had 3 good seasons that showed tiger fans we could be good again, before the wheels fell off.
I also understand vandy was an absolute shite job, probably worse then than it is now, but it still seems like lsu would only show interest if he at least made a bowl. Was joe dean that much of a cheap arse?

I was young when dinardo was coaching but for whatever reason this has always been maybe the most fascinating part of tiger football history to me.

Well he lost his first choice because he didn't want to pay a 400K buyout and LSU was a crappy job at the time.

DiNardo on paper was a good hire. He did bring in a lot of good recruits. Lou Tepper was abysmal and Jerry didn’t adjust well. He is to be thanked for pulling us somewhat out of the dark ages with Faulk and Faneca.

He was seen as an up and comer because he guided dreadful at the time Vandy to a 5-6 season and beat someone good that year (maybe Georgia?). Plus we knew he’d be cheap.

He was an upgrade over Curley. Besides LSU was happy winning 8 or 9 games a year and going to a decent bowl back then. When they hired Nick Saban he wasn't near the coach he is now or has been since he left Miami. But Nick's work ethic, what he demands from his staff, and his dislike for the media, and stupid questions has never changed from day one.

Pat Sullivan from TCU. He was actually the second or third choice, but the others weren't interested.

TAF was around then. It may not have been as influential, but it was around when Archer was hired as I recall.

Both options were mid to low tier coaches. Pat Sullivan at TCU was an Auburn legend and had moderate success at TCU. Joe didn’t want to pay the buyout. Dinardo had similar success at Vandy and no buyout issues. If Joe had offered the going rate, he likely would have attracted better candidates. Joe ran the AD like a true business—-keep overhead as low as possible. This worked well to keep the AD in the black during several lean years. It was short sighted , however, as the failure to invest in the money making sport by hiring a proven winner put LSU into a position of looking for a new coach just 4 years later. All and all, Dinardo wasn’t a bad hire. He screwed himself with the Tepper hire in ‘98 amd refusal to fire him in ‘99.

I wouldn't go that far. He never had a winning record in four seasons at Vanderbilt. His claim to fame was that he made Vandy more competitive in the SEC than they had been in 10 years or so, but he certainly wasn't looked at as being great. Hell, Hallman had better bona-fides than Dinardo when LSU hired Curley.
LSU "hired" Pat Sullivan (who had much more success in turning around a weak TCU program) then got into a fight with TCU/Sullivan over payment of Sullivan's $400k buyout. Dean had egg on his face and quickly hired Dinardo (who would later fight with Vandy about his buyout)
