What the hell does Elon Musk think he’s doing by launching reusable rockets?

He’s once again proving the inefficiency of huge government programs (NASA) and he’s inspiring other visionaries to get in the race.
Musk had the benefit of tapping into NASA’s research and proven technology but he’s shown the world his company has accomplished quite a bit on a fraction of NASA’s taxpayer funded budget. I’m not dissing NASA’s place in space exploration history but it’s clear for most run of the mill space launches the private sector is the future.

What's wrong with a little competition?

Absolutely nothing. Space exploration is one of the few places I believe international cooperation could be extremely beneficial but I would still like to see the US be the world’s technology leader in space exploration.

The government sucks at everything.

NASA does a ton of legwork, so they still do a lot of things that SpaceX cant.

Agreed, and this is what true entrepreneurs do. He's a visionary/pioneer paving the way for the future. He's not a facist trying to control everything he comes into contact with and encourages pure advancement.

Government doesn’t care about over spending for something that could’ve been done much cheaper because its not their money. And odds are high that some of that over spending is being spent with a supplier or service provider that is well connected and makes generous campaign contributions. Its the main reason why the private sector is more efficient at practically everything than the government

Personally I’d love nothing more than for the Chinese to land on the Moon. The Space Race is a glorified dick measuring competition. If Earth were the size of a basketball then the Moon would proportionately be 30 feet across the room and about the size of a softball. Do you know how far a person has gone from that basketball since 1972? 3/8 of an inch. So right now we got the 30 foot long dick vs the micropenis. While I’m not optimistic about this administration (at least they kept the Space Force and said it was a good idea), the Chinese landing on the Moon would get actual patriotic Americans dicks hard to go further than we have before than that. It could unify us again against a clear enemy with clear goals: Moon Base and getting to Mars.
Unfortunately Russia and China vow to build the first Moon Base together, and if they succeed, that would be devastating for the overall course of humanity. It would turn the stars from a conquest of true freedom and liberty from extinction to spreading authoritarianism throughout the stars. It is ridiculously cheaper and more efficient to produce fuel on the Moon and launch from there than from the Earth. It takes a ridiculous amount of fuel to escape Earth’s gravity and atmosphere, but nothing to launch from the Moon and have a shite ton of remaining fuel to do whatever we damn well please through the cosmos. Even if we beat Russia and China in creating a space elevator, that wouldn’t be enough if those two countries successfully build a moon base in the near future, divide the Moon up among themselves, and get nuclear weapons there to protect their assets.

Not hard when you hire based on skills and not race/gender or greatly overpay for every part like the government.

He also has the ability to use information used in the past, and 60 years of technology advance (much of which was started in the original space program).

Just more proof that the private sector is more fiscally responsible than the government. Why does NASA care about replacing rockets when it's our money.
Just imagine when we all have government universal health insurance.

It’s a shame Neil Armstrong even didn’t care for Musk’s approach to private sector space travel.

Musk.. focused on sending mankind into space.
Our government.. focused on racebaiting.

Also, government agencies that don't spend their full budget commonly have their budget cut the next year, so they want to make sure to spend it all.
