Eight-team playoff. Five Power 5 conference champions, 1 non-P5 champ and two at-large. Twelve-team playoff. Seeds announced by CFP committee the Sunday after conference championships. Round one the weekend after Army-Navy: 12 at 5, 11 at 6, 10 at 7, 9 at 8. Round two Christmas weekend on campus hosted by seeds 1-4. Do not reseed after round 1. 12/5 winner at 4, 11/6 winner at 3, 10/7 winner at 2, 8/9 winner at 1.
“Semifinal 1 New Year’s Day at Rose Bowl. Semifinal 2 New year’s day at Orange Bowl. Final game Monday night same as this year, rotating among New Orleans, Dallas, Glendale, Atlanta.
“Keep 6 to 12 midweek bowl games for TV inventory with non-playoff teams. Each P5 conference is guaranteed 1 playoff team. No conference can have more than 3 participants to ensure a meaningful and competitive SEC schedule. SEC should go to pod scheduling to ensure that the top three teams are decided fairly.
quote:
I would go to 16 teams. Each conference from the American to the Sun Belt gets an automatic berth. Six at-large decided by the committee. Make it a true Division I championship. Mandate nine conference games for each school and prohibit any FCS buy games. 11 game regular season — with two nonconference games, one P5 and one G5. The ninth conference game will include the conference championship, and those not qualifying for the conference title game will play a cross-divisional game — much like the Big Ten last year.
“The first round will be played on campus of the higher seed the 2nd weekend of December, when Army-Navy is generally played. The current six bowls will be used for quarters and semis on a rotating basis. Quarters around NYD. First year Orange, Peach, Cotton and Fiesta with Sugar and Rose hosting semis a week or so later on the following Saturday. National championship will be moved to MLK weekend at a neutral site that is bid out.”

The playoff has inarguably made college football worse off than it was in the BCS era.
So lets DOUBLE down and further entrench the same teams who will compete for a title every year while sucking the meaning out of the regular season.

Nah
That’s far more drastic then saying the top G5 team or teams should make the playoffs.

Reseed every round, make the regular season mean something.

If you're going to expand make it six teams. 1 and 2 get a bye.

The idea of home playoff games in CFB is actually kinda cool. Especially if a place like Wisconsin hosted one in the middle of December. I'll probably be in the minority but I think Quarterfinal Saturday would be loads of fun. Put 1 on Friday night, 1 Saturday morning, 1 Saturday afternoon, and 1 Saturday primetime

Although technically an 8-team playoff, the P5 auto-bids technically make those a play-in game, so theoretically it's more like a 12-team playoff
(assuming the CG losers aren't granted at-large bids *cough* Bama *cough*)

i feel like most of the time it goes like this past year and we question if we even need a 4th team
going to 16 is just fricking dumb

How has it made it worse? If we had the old system Bama would still be dominating it, all the playoff does is give more chances to other teams. You traditionalists are so devoid of logic

Alabama would probably have the same number of NCs even with the playoffs. Just trade 2014 (OSU was the no.4 seed and Bama would’ve probably played weak arse FSU) for the 2017 title (Bama was the no.4).

This isn't about Alabama. You losers always make it about yourself. This is rewarding other teams who win their division, conference, etc. Not everyone has the luxury of being second best in their division and still receive the opportunity to play for a title.

Maybe, maybe not the point of expansion isn't to get a different champion it's to give more teams a chance. Right now pur format only consists of four teams with 5 P5 conferences and no chance for a G5 team to win it. An expansion to 8 or even 16 also gives us the chance to have playoff games at the higher seeds stadium which puts far greater emphasis on the seeding

Every American sport allows this

I didn’t make it about Alabama you dumbass. I was responding to the OP that said the BCS helped Alabama more when it really didn’t make a difference.

Not even close to the disaster of CFB. Those teams are forced to play more games and earn their way.

I just don’t think 16 teams are worthy of a playoff spot. You’d have 4 loss teams getting in.
Posted on 5/7/21 at 10:23 am to dawgfan24348
16 is too many. Needs to be capped at 12.
This talk of expanding the playoff ruining the regular season is nonsense. You have to win your conference to be guaranteed a spot. If you don't win your conference or even your division then it's gonna be really difficult for you to make it unless it's just a down year for everyone else.

Are 16 seed teams worthy in college basketball?
In 2019 you'd have
LSU
Ohio State
Clemson
Oklahoma
Oregon
Appalachian State
Memphis
FAU
Miami (OH)
Boise State
All of them receiving autos assuming we went CBB rules with Miami being the only teams not having double digit wins.
For the at large teams we'd have (Going by the final CFP rankings)
Georgia
Baylor
Wisconsin
Florida
Now LSU probably still wins that tourney because how good they were but there's absolutely no guarantee the other games are absolute chaos
Of course we could also go P5 teams auto and a bunch of at large teams as well which gives Penn State, Auburn, Bama, Utah, and Michigan a chance

Disagree. Expand the playoffs and recruiting changes. You see the same constant groupies that want to go to the same 4-5 schools each year because “their chance at the playoffs.” You open that up to a number of schools and recruiting widens a little bit. Texas, USC, Miami all aren’t holding their weights. The kids that normally go to these schools flock to Alabama and Ohio St.

The difference between CBB’s best is far smaller compared to CFB. Often times the 2nd ranked team is capable of smashing the 15th ranked team by 30 points. In the sport of basketball, the blowouts aren’t as large.

Miami (OH)
8-6 team wow
That’s why G5 teams should not get auto bids. Under no circumstance does a 5 loss G5 belong in a playoff.
I can’t see a situation in which G5 teams get an auto bid. They might do P5 champs and the rest being at large bids which would include 1-3 G5 teams, but no way does a G5 conference get treated as equal. You might argue it doesn’t matter but I’m going based on how we’ve seen G5 conferences treated by the higher ups of CFB. They don’t get much respect. It’s all about the ratings. A playoff featuring Bama, AU, ND, Michigan, etc. is going to bring in far higher ratings then one featuring FAU, Memphis, Miami (OH), etc.
So under a proposed 16 team playoffs you would probably have quite a few 3 loss teams. Maybe even some 4 loss teams some years.

We’ve already seen that most of the playoff games have been blowouts. People don’t know if a game between 10th ranked ND and 23rd rank Cincinnati is going to be upset. They won’t tune in unless it is already in the process. I don’t think the higher ups will take that risk.
