Maybe the companies should pay drivers more.

Chemical drivers can make $75-90K a year.... there are sign-on bonuses offered from nearly every company, safety bonuses.... etc.

They make a descent living.

Sounds like I need to drag up my office job for that. Gotta be less stressful than having the phone ring 24/7

No, because trucks use diesel engines at the moment. Every year there is something new these trucks get on them so learning about some new thing won't be anything new to mechanics. Even electric motors.

keep asking my carriers - Why are ya'll advertising for drivers in the same places every other carrier is? The average Joe doesn't understand that a chemical hauler can make $90K a year these days with what chemical drivers are being paid right now. Advertise your pay! I never hear an ad on the radio or see a commercial on TV. There are no billboards on I-10/12 advertising for drivers and what the pay scales are.... My point is - no one outside of the trucking world knows that you pay well!!

Because they want experienced drivers. It takes time and costs money to train someone.

We found the person who doesn't know how a truck works.

The trucks have governors.

And? Stay in the right lane if you can't pass with some semblance of urgency.

Silicon valley already creating driverless trucks, only a matter of time before they replace all truck drivers.

Will NEVER happen, especially within the Chemical / HazMat, Heavy Haul, and specialized segments. Amazon and other Dry Van operators might be operating ‘assisted’ units in 10yrs, but the current infrastructure is at least 5-10yrs out with being able to support computer operated units

This story comes out every year, yet pay never seems to increase substantially.

Consider the source.

Ol Anti did it accident free for 25 years..local and short haul and with the kind of money they are throwing around right now I am tempted to come out of retirement.

It's good money, but not good enough.

They'll get H1B visa workers to drive trucks before they start raising rates.

I can tell you guys this.... it's been hard covering freight and not only that, these rates are not sustainable. People are paying outrageous rates right now. The crash will be glorious.

I might get out of brokerage and go into driving if this shite keeps up. I got customers who are asking me to do contract freight with them and there is no way we can commit to that.

A Safe reliable Coast to Coast rail system could handle most of this traffic in goods

There’s rail everywhere. I-40 is the easiest way to go coast to coast. Rail lines follow the road with a constant flow of double stacked box cars. The problem is the last mile getting goods to their final destination.

The US economy is about $21 trillion, with $12 trillion in consumption of goods. Logistics and supply chains are a little more complex than just use rail for everything.

They’ve been talking about this shortage since I was in college and that was 10 years ago. Not new news

Yep, it's been going on longer than that. I don't doubt there is a shortage of truck drivers, but this smells of trucking companies trying to increase the pool of drivers to drive down wages.

wages to the drivers aren't the issue. The companies still paying $.49 cents a mile to them. when you have 0 capacity and freight that has to get out, people are going to pay.

I've done more loads last month but my profit margin dropped drastically. I don't know how we haven't see crazy prices at the store yet supply chain market is in shambles

for those asking about the rail method - the problem with intermodal is these railways are owned by private companies and they get to say who and what goes on the rail system. I have a customer who has freight in Los Angeles that needs to be railed to TX and GP is refusing to put it on a container.

Do truck drivers know how their trucks work? If my vehicle takes 8 minutes to complete a pass I would stay my arse in the right lane.

I think by 2035 or 2040 trucking could be automated.
