Watched this again last night. Highest level of recommendation.

Plot summary is that it's set in a rural village in South Korea and strange killings are occurring and a policeman investigates the issues and then his daughter develops the early symptoms and shite gets real.

Stylistically, it's not really a "slow burn" but it's atmospheric and quite long (about 2.5 hours). It does develop over time like a slow burn but it's much more invigorating and engaging than what I consider a "slow burn". It's got a lot of mystery/investigation with twists and turns.

ETA: just read a review that summarized it perfectly:

quote:

The Wailing is kind of like getting slowly suffocated for two and a half hours, and I mean that in a good way. It’s a crushing film; pedaling in a slow-cooked intensity that eventually boils over into a full-on nightmare.

It really does build, not just atmosphere but also emotion. The final 30 minutes are insanely tense. Very chilling more than scary, but it will frick with your head a bit.

It's on Hulu, Amazon Prime, and you can rent it for free via your Library/Overdrive.

One of my favorite horror movies. It’s also chock full of South Korean myth references. If you liked The Witch, you’ll love this movie.

It's quite possibly the best horror movie of the 2010s, other than Kill List or maybe Hereditary

I meant to include this in OP. It has a lot of SK and east Asian mythology included, like most Japanese/Korean horror, but this one actually is very accessible to the West by including Catholic/Christianity directly into the movie. It makes some of the underlying issues much more palatable.

This was the first movie that really turned me on to movies, and directors, from South Korea. I also really enjoy the directors earlier movie The Chaser.

Top notch movie. There are few films, especially in the horror realm, that tell a story so effectively. No cheap scares or over the top gore. The writers give just enough info as the story progresses to make you feel the paranoia and confusion of the characters. Then when it all comes together the last 30 minutes, the payoff is incredible.

Also, for being almost 3 hours long, not a minute is wasted on filler. Every scene is relevant and moves the story closer to its conclusion

I think they could easily cut out 15 minutes or so. Don't want to get into spoilers but some scenes go on too long or include superfluous stuff. I'm thinking of one scene in particular towards the end.

There's one scene involving emesis that you just never want to end.

One of my favorite things about this movie is its depiction of an exorcism ceremony. I have no idea how accurate it is but it's quite different from what we're used to in Western horror.

My favorite Korean horror film is A Tale of Two Sisters. I think it's clever the way everything ties together and makes sense in the end.

Its better than The Witch, which is a little too abstruse.

The Wailing is what horror should be about.

See also The Orphanage, Sinister, Goodnight Mommy, Kairo, etc.

It really is great. It might be the best horror film I’ve ever seen at not tipping its hand (trying to be vague to avoid spoilers) until absolutely necessary. Korean filmmakers have been killing it for years now.

Why?

Because Jason isn't in it?
