I think last nights draft selection came down to this....

The Saints had no intention on trading up because they didn't want to use draft capital/picks. They need all they can get to get some rookie contracts on the books.
I truly believe they would have taken Newsome at 28 if he were not grabbed two spots earlier. By 28, all the CBs and LBs we would have loved to have were off the boards, so we settled for DE. I still would have went with the best WR or DT on the board to fill holes, but for some reason Payton was high on the DE selected.

I think we definitely wanted to trade up for Horn or Surtain depending on how things turned out. But the price was too high for us.

At his presser CSP all but admitted that he tried to trade up but couldn't get a viable deal for what they were looking for. It's obvious we had to fill the holes Hendrickson and Granderson left at some point. Let's face facts, Davenport up to now hasn't been worth the investment.

I don't think LB is as much of a need as fans think. They let Anzalone walk also and pretty much run a base Nickle to keep Ceedy Duce on the field. Zach Baun is their second LB in their minds.
The top 4 corners were taken
the top 5 Wideouts where taken
the top 5 QBs were taken
the one LB that had the most smoke with this Saints went 16.
The only head scratcher was the ND LB but every team passed on him also. Something elses is going on there.
Maybe the safety from TCU to replace Jenkins eventually. Terrance Marshall was never on the Saints radar unfortunately. Looks like they took BPA on their board. This is what they have pretty much done in early rounds last 4 years. Only problem the Saints BPA is usually different from most of the "experts" out there.

I agree with this. I could change my statement from "they had no intention to trade up" to "there was no way we had enough extra picks to deal to trade up and still be okay with what was remaining". Every team is smart to see if it is viable, but the Saints knew before doing the research that it wasn't going to happen unless someone fell into the early 20s or maybe late teens, but all the really good players we coveted were gone by then.

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!
they were desperate to trade up but no one, nobody wanted to trade down to the 28th pick
the saints would have had to give up everything they had to do it and even then it was a hard sell
truth of the matter is picks 25-32 are almost impossible to trade because players worth trading for arent there at those picks and any team making the trade is pretty much agreeing to pick from the leftovers at those spots.
there are documented reports the saints were ringing the phones off the hooks with around 7-8 teams trying to make a move and no one was interested, but the saints were in fact desperately trying hard to trade up or down, there just wasnt anyone interested

Disagree
The Saints wanted Horn or Surtain but they price was apparently too high and/or Carolina, who took Horn, wasn't doing business with a division rival.

Very possible. But just because the analyst liked him doesn't mean the Saints did.
I don't think the Saints "settled" for Turner. I think they simply took the highest defensive player on their board at the moment. While DE probably wasn't the biggest "need" I don't think I've ever heard a team say "we just have way too many pass rushers"

Completely agree here, but I did want to note the weirdest anomaly that happened last night. Division rival trades can happen as Dallas and Philly swapped picks with Dallas getting an extra 3rd. However, there is a substantial difference going from 12 to 10 versus 28 to 9.

We should have used a little draft capital to move up just a few spots to get Newsome the CB from Northwestern. Drafting someone too high is a different kind of use of draft capital.

Hyperbole much?

The Athletic reported that saints tried to trade with Denver, but the new GM wanted multiple firsts and multiple 2nds.
No way Sean was going to get pick-raped like the Bears did when the moved up 9 spots but gave up 2 1sts, a 4th and a 5th.

Demonstrably false

Knowing that makes the pick sound more sensible, but there’s still a massive hole at corner.
Not sure how that gets filled at this point.

Should have taken marshall
Posted on 4/30/21 at 2:21 pm to TIGERSby10
They definitely wanted to trade up. The guys they felt good about at linebacker and corner were gone. So they got a guy who they were really high on that can be an impact player. Rushing the passer becomes more important every year with the way the game is changing.

I really thought we would take the TCU safety. It would have been a solid value pick and Jenkins will be gone next year so it would’ve filled an eventual need.
We’d have two nice young safeties in Williams and him. I like Marshall but he may be too similar to Callaway who I have high hopes for. Think we need a speedy deep threat type to put pressure on defenses. And those will be available in the 2nd and 3rd easily.

This pick has more to do with Cam Jordan. Davenport may not be signed after 2021 but Jordan is 32 has one of the highest cap charges on the team and his play was subpar last year. He’s gone after 2021 as well..

You have to find a partner. The only viable option around there was probably Jax at 25. So then you have to measure their pull to Etienne.
