Band Nerd I guess.

My graduating class is really unique. We didn’t really have traditional cliques. Lots of jocks in the band, cheerleaders in AP science and math, etc. We ended up having a really close group for a class of 270ish.

My ten year reunion was freaking great. Good to see a lot of people. Covid cancelled the 20th but were supposed to try again this fall.

Jr High I was socially awkward and didn’t have many real friends. Once high school started I began hanging with the popular crowd at parties some of my neighbors would host and been a social butterfly ever since. I would say I was with the popular crowd, but really mostly got along with everyone. Loved chatting with the nerds about pop culture stuff, was in the choir (baritone), in the drama club, on the golf team, and every two weeks we’d play Texas Hold Em. Kind of a Jack of all trades and master of none. Had one bully who everyone hated, but he ended up going to jail for a while getting caught with a kilo of cocaine at one point, so I guess I got the last laugh there.

Never fit into a clique. 3.9 GPA didn't go over well with the redneck baws, dirt poor family didn't go over well with the preppies. Wasn't into nerdy stuff, and I sure as hell wasn't gonna dress like a Goth just to fit in somewhere. I managed.

I was one of the cool kids who in hindsight was just another immature dick. Not afraid to say it.

I was a decent looking pothead that played sports in a small town populated almost entirely with sixes that did butt stuff.

I was the stoner with nerd brains and jock athletic ability that told the coaches to F Off for being jerks and classmates turned to for explanations when the teachers couldn't express ideas/concepts well.

Wasn't the smartest as there 2 or 3 smarter in my class. Probably was the best all around athlete just not a superstar at everything. Baseball and track I was very good (Junior Olympic sprinter), football I was being scouted by the big colleges before I even got to HS, basketball never excited me in the least.

Because I moved a lot I never bothered to get really close to friends. As in HS ended and so did those friendships, except 1 who OD'd a few years later. Was OK as I moved away for college and parents moved again while I was a sophomore so haven't been back in 35 years. I just do not get attached to people, places, things, as they're all ephemeral.

All the moving around led to my ease of communication with everyone. Race, sex, creed, national origin, social class, ethnicity, doesn't matter. I understand them, they understand me. Always walked my own path, lead rather than follow, but went alone if nobody else was interested. It's easier to do when one has confidence in their brains and physicality to get through whatever they set their mind to.

I was a jock because I played football.

Socially, I was a rung or two below the most popular kids. (Whats that called?) My buddies and I were the types that had to ask where the party was and show up. We didn't get the auto invites like the popular kids and we definitely weren't in the rich kids circles.

It might have been because I ran around with friends that would be considered hell raisers. We were a rowdy bunch and loved to get tanked.

I was damn immature at the time and barely graduated because I was to focused on drinking, weed, and girls.

Best thing I did was take a few years off after Hs, moved to Colorado and ski bummed it, before I got serious and started college.

Youngest in my class always. Luckily I was big for my age, I hit six foot tall in ninth grade.

Tested well, my ASVAB score was the highest in the State my Junior year.

Didn’t care about grades until my junior year, straight As from then on.

Played football (was mediocre), was on the team only to further my social life with the ladies.

That was frustrating for my coaches because they could see that I had talent but was only going through the motions.

Most Likely to Succeed & Most Wittiest, Runner-Up to Mr “*” High, I found out later that I was supposed to have won that but the principal overruled the Yearbook staff...

I had an idyllic time upon reflection but I’ve never looked back.

Better things were to come.
