I’m looking for a do it your self security video camera set up for the house. I guess possibly a wifi set up so I can view from my phone. 4-5 cameras. What do y’all recommend?

My Ring system is bulletproof. Easy to set up, completely customizable. You can have as many cameras or sensors as you want. You can run it monitored or unmonitored. No contracts. I’ve got two external cameras and motion lights and I’m about to add one more.

There's a fair bit of topics on this on the tech board.
From a quality, reliability standpoint, a power over ethernet(PoE) based system is going to be the best. You get higher quality videos, 24/7 recording, and can still have the ability to view from an app/phone. There's several systems out there...reo/ubiquiti etc. Downside is that you need to run cables from a central location to each camera location.
On the other hand, you can do something like Ring(or arlo, etc) which is wireless/wifi based. While not recording 24/7, they will take shots a set intervals an then record when motion is triggered for a predetermined time. The app works fairly well. Pros is that the set-up is easy. Just stick the cameras up were you want and go from there. It's easy to add more cameras or other functionality without having to run a new wire to each location.
With that said, I have a ring based system and mostly like it. I will say that the devices/cameras that I have powered via an established power(I replaced a couple of floodlights I had with Ring floodlights) work better than the battery powered devices (I have a solar charging panel). They are much more responsive and you can set more frequent motion/interval checking than you can with battery powered devices. Motion detection is okay for either. I did turn off motion alerts on a one of the cameras that were firing too often due to bushes moving or spiders. It'll still record, but I just wont get an alert on my phone. This is some way defeats the purpose of having the system, but I suppose still being able to record an event is useful regardless.

I have Ring cameras and have installed many. Last job was 6 floodlight cameras and a doorbell camera. Easy to get running and lots of options for setting detection zones and notifications.

We have Ring.
Three cameras outside and the doorbell. Love it.

Wyze cams. 1.25 /MO subscription per cam although free for vids with a 5 minute cool off period. Super simple to set up, high quality video and with the sub has person only motion detection. Cameras are only 28 bucks a piece.

You've gotten some good recs already, although I would highly suggest a wired POE system that RECORDS at 1080p+. Most cameras look great in live feed, not all record at the same quality.
That being said, placement is essential. Too many people mount them as high as possible and/or in places that are not ideal in order to maximize coverage area. This is usually at the cost of losing important details that matter if/when you need footage for evidence purposes.
Example: You have a package stolen off your porch. Do you want the view of the suspect (who's wearing a hat) from the camera "securely" mounted in your roof eave or the doorbell level view?
Ideally, you'd have both, but for someone with limited cams, place them where they will actually do you some good.
Also be sure to not only adjust them for daytime, but at night too. IR is a fickle bitch and many crimes occur at night.
If you have any follow up questions, let me know. Id be happy to help or expound.
Lastly, while the company is absolutely terrible for customer service, Lorex/FLIR has great cameras for the price and those with limited technical knowledge.

I did my own with Amcrest HD cameras. They are all POE, and I used an older, extra computer as the server. I run Blue Iris software. I am very happy with the system, and it is over 4 years old.

I am on my second POE system with Reolink due to buying a new home. No complaints.
Running the wires was not enjoyable, but once the pathways are up-its simple.
I also supplement it with a couple Ring spotlight cameras and doorbell.

I bought a four camera eight channel 5 megapixel Reolink camera system that is POE. The installation was super simple. It is not Wi-Fi though. But you can view it through your phone

If ring would upgrade to 4K, it would be great. My next house I’ll probably get something else because Ring refuses to upgrade their video quality
