For some reason, people think of high speed rail as a futuristic Tokyo style mass transit system. The reality is that it will look like every other metro railway inside of 3 months: homeless people setting up camp, urban youths celebrating their culture, graffiti, crime etc. Makes me wonder if people have never been on the MARTA, BART, The T, or the L.

Serious question, what does a coast-to-coast high-speed rail solve?
Environmental? I don't think so - the resources used to construct and maintain such a monstrosity would be enormous.
Cost? Not really. A project like that would take decades to show a positive ROI, unless the federal government does it then it would never have a positive ROI. Even once built a ticket is going to be at least $2-300 easily. Right now, you can fly JFK to LAX roundtrip for $298.
What is there in this?

We are not Germany and our country has alot of land. If they started today I doubt I would be able to travel cross country on a high speed rail before I die. Airplanes are just faster and more efficient and will be the best option moving forward.
