If Gentry was here we would have never got point Zion.
This isn't true, by the way. SVG said in one of his press conferences that the previous staff was getting ready to implement Point Zion when the pandemic happened. And SVG doesn't have any reason to carry water for Gentry, so I don't know why he would make that up and volunteer it if it weren't true.

Yeah, Point Zion has always been a Griff vision and also the way Zion prefers to play. It wouldn’t matter who was coaching tbh, we were going to see it happen this year.

Neither, Van Gundy’s hiring has felt like a stop gap hire from day one imo.
The other names we were hearing most often were Ty Lue and Jason Kidd, if memory serves. SVG had a reputation for constructing good defenses, we desperately needed defense. It hasn’t worked out very well, but I kind of understand the thinking.
Zion, BI, Jaxson and NAW have shown defensive improvement, but the team as a whole still can’t stop anyone consistently. Tough to say whether or not the individual improvements have anything to do with Stan.
I would have preferred Chris Finch at the time, but I also wouldn’t have fired Monty after he showed continual improvement in a very bad situation. First year notwithstanding

stan deserves another season so he gets normal practice days.
fwiw i dont think Lonzo is the answer long-term.
i would have done the oubre deal without demanding the mnpls pick (get 2022 unprotected gsw first and give a pels 2022 2nd).

We can't just critique the coaching though. I think with the players the Pels have if your goal was to maximize wins this season Gentry or Finch would have been the better coach because pace and space plays to the natural strength of the team.
People are up in arms acting like Van Gundy is being stubborn or stupid and not adapting. He was tasked by Griffin to focus on exactly what he's focusing on. Making this non defensive team play defense. All I know is either Lonzo needs to take an unlikely step up on defense this summer, or the Pels need to trade for a starting caliber player good enough to lead a defense first team. Because without that you're going to get the same results again. And people will bitch and moan about how bad the coaching is when the real problem would be the POBO trying to shove a square peg in a round hole and make the team try to be something it isn't.
What was the point of trading Jrue Holiday again?

He's contract was up and we were not going to pay him what he wanted.

Did you see his new contract?
There was no world where paying a 31 year old on the backside of his career a max contract for four more years makes sense unless he is a legit superstar.
We’d have an unmanageable luxury tax payroll for a team that, let’s be honest, wouldn’t even be a top 5 seed.

I’ve actually thought Stan has been doing a better job as of late. The offense is evolving and it’s looking pretty solid most nights. Some of the defense is getting better. It’s clear we built a system banking on teams not getting white hot from 3 every game but that’s not working, maybe due to the empty arenas?

I didn't create this post as a typical after loss meltdown rant. I understand young teams drop games like they did against the Blazers and I'm against constantly changing coaches. But when I look at the team this year vs last year, what's changed? Last year the team gave up tons of points in the lane, this year it's wide open threes. It's the threes that kill this team's spirit. It's why they keep blowing leads. At the very least Gentry and his staff acknowledged after the terrible start last year that the defense had to be simplified and made changes which became evident before the shutdown. I have yet to see any change in the defensive strategy this year. No way does the team record represent the talent on this team. And the lineups are almost as terrible as Gentry. In Gundy's defense he will call timeouts

All of a sudden everybody loves Monty. There were tons of fire Monty threads on here years before he got fired and the board as a whole wanted him gone long before he was fired. Not so much anymore.

Because people are doing the same thing today with Gundy they did with Monty, with Gentry.
Things don’t go perfect and the first person/thing everyone looks to blame is the coach.
And then groupthink starts kicking in and hot takes turn into convictions and then opposing views get marginalized and attacked.
This team just played 5 games in 7 days. The NBA is brutal in their scheduling in normal times, yet that sort of shite is unheard before this season. This is one of the youngest teams missing key starters and depth players on a team lacking depth.
It’s just bizarre to me how people just ignore all that shite, and other context like how good this team was looking when healthy, and go into lazy coach whining

Monty was terrible. Absolutely putrid.
Suns are decent this year tho. Almost .500

I miss Monty. Loomis fricked up badly when be sided with his fellow GM (Dell), over Monty
Even if he's solid now, look how long it took.

Monty was a good, young ascending coach and an even better person. We had a young team and they were improving every year. Also, Monty was top 2 in points per possession in ATO’s in that last season. I don’t think that’s a trait of a bottom 3 coach.
Dell built a roster of basically 6 usable players with 3 of them being injury riddled combo guards. I think Monty was doing well considering his personnel.
Monty basically got fired because he got swept by an all time great team in the first rd of the playoffs. 3 of the 4 games, we actually had a chance to win, but the Warriors had already taken their lumps and had their growing pains in the playoffs and it was our turn to take ours.
Under Monty, we played a controlled, disciplined style of ball that limited turnovers and focused on defense. It was an equation that actually was working despite 4 of our top 6 players being defensive turnstiles.

I didn't like the hire but given the total lack of real offseason its tough to judge

We know that you define your life by your politics. I'm sure that the Pelicans organization is devastated by your lack of support.
