How long would it take to kayak 40ish miles?

I am wanting to go on a float trip on the river. I have casually been out on day trips and fishing backwater a lot but never anything that long. I know it all depends on current and such but roughly how many days would you say it would take to go on a trip that long? Would be solo so advice on essentials to take with me would be appreciated as well. Thank you

3 or 4 days. I would plan for 4 if you plan to stop and fish along the way or just want to take your time to enjoy the trip.

call one of the float trip rental places there and ask
i wouldnt expect to get very far each day unless you plan to constantly paddle the whole time and if you do that, figure walking speed or maybe 3-4 miles an hour at best

I’d say 4 days to do it leisurely. The longest trip I take is a 13 mile and it’s a good 12 hour float with stopping for food and to swim and goof off.

It would also probably depend on exactly WHAT river you plan to do this on. Some slow moving river out in back country would be pretty interesting but likely would require more paddling to get in the miles.
Doing the Mississippi right now with high water and fast moving currents would probably be quicker, but a hell of a lot more dangerous with big ship river traffic, crew boats, tugs and barges, etc. plying those waters. I know those big ships throw quite a wake, especially when heading up-river against the river's flow.

My cousin did 100 miles in 12 hours on the Gallatin river, last summer. So just depends on the flow speed.

Depends on the river. You can easily do that in a day on some.

Lots of variables as pointed out ... leisurely floating taking in the elements or paddling for time constraints. Several years ago I met this young kid, Sam Mathieu (23 yrs old) who kayaked the Mississippi River from MN to the GOM. He paddled from 35 miles to 112 miles each day. I met him in Destrehan and took care of him with Cajun groceries. Click on this instagram link to follow his epic 76 day journey with awesome pics, video, and great writing skills ... Sam's solo river run The detailed pics of the river are astounding how they change from crystal clear, to blue, to muddy brown over it's 2400 mile course.

Ghost River Section of the Wolf River up here is ~ 9 miles. That's easily done in 6 hours and it's a lot of slow going through parts. Lots of trees and blow downs to navigate.

I picked up a canoer about 5 years ago coming in from an overnighter tuna fishing just south of port eads in mid December. Put his kayak in the boat and rolled back to venice was crazy dude had started where the Mississippi was just a ditch. Camped out on side of river for I forgot how many months as he made his way down. Smelled pretty bad but was an awesome dude.

I looked into the Devils river trip and 48 miles is approximately 4 days.

Just took a look at his Instagram story and read the account of how you met him. Dude, that’s seriously an awesome bit of hospitality. Good job representing Louisiana well

8 hrs if down stream with the current.

100 miles seems insane in a day. I’ve never kayaked without drinking and having fun, but I’ve done 8-10 miles a day on a river that flows 3-4 miles and hour and it takes 6-8 hours of paddling usually. Now this was with hobie’s and others so not meant to cover distance.
But I would check local guides and go from there as said.

About 12 hours of steady paddling with no stops and the current at your back.
