Platoon...seem to be about as close as you can get to what it was really like from reading biographies.

Neither of them really watched war movies, but both have been deceased for 10 years. They weren't "bothered," per say that I noticed though my dad did have pTSD so maybe he just avoided it and I didn't realize.

My grandfather never talked about WW2. I asked my mom why, and she said his lifelong best friend was in war with him. They were shooting at the enemy and decided to switch positions and as soon as they switched, his best friend took a bullet in the head. That's all he ever mentioned so we never asked him about it. He was like our best friend. When my grandmother died me and brothers each took turns living with him for almost 10 years to take care of him. When he died that was tough.

quote:I started this again last night (inspired by this thread). They really nailed a lot of the mundane details that you don't usually see and it's obvious there was tons of input from people that were there. I'm only on the first episode, but the AAFES in a CONEX, the huge storm that blew down half our shite the night before the invasion (lost the whole chow hall in that), the boxes of haji water everywhere, getting issued fricking woodland pattern Jlist.
Generation Kill
The only thing I've noticed is they try to play up the army having it better than it did at that time, but not surprised by that. It is, after all, about marines, and the notion that the army always has it better seems to be central to their identity when in reality we were all sitting in the same spots (at that time) dealing with the same bullshite.
There was a scene I found funny where the reporter had a hard time securing his MOPP gear during the first SCUD alert. That alert also fricked me up. I had my weapon (203) completely taken apart and spread out on my cot and was cleaning it when the first alert sounded. Remember that at the time we were all terrified of gas (if you notice on the show they react by calling "GAS GAS GAS"). I somehow ran a hundred yards while reassembling my weapon and trying to go to MOPP 4. I was so preoccupied with that shite that I forgot to duck as I entered the concrete bunker and bashed my head into the top at a full run. Knocked myself out, split my forehead open, and got called 'Crash" after that for months.

My Uncle was retired Colonel in the Army. Master Army Aviator. DSC, Distinguished Flying Cross, Silver Star, Multiple Bronze Stars. 3 Purple Hearts. Infantry in Korea. 3 Tours in Viet Nam. His last tour he flew dust off. Shot down multiple times. Never talked about it around us when growing up. After I had been thru the ringer, he opened up and talked me often last couple of years of his life. He was a hardass, Army through and through. RIP Uncle B, I miss you!

Platoon has got to be the most realistic overall.

My Paw Paw has never watched a movie or read a book about Vietnam.

quote:I'm 42 so Platoon and FMJ were the biggest influences on my expectations of the military and combat. Sitting on the other side of it I'd say the second half of FMJ was the closest to Iraq but that's why it's so difficult to name any one as "The Most Realistic". They're going to feel wildly different by conflict and few people have experienced more than one or two of them to accurately judge. I know guys that were in Mogadishu and they say Blackhawk Down. Vietnam era guys say Platoon or FMJ or We Were Soldiers, WW2 guys say Saving Private Ryan. Really no way to tell.
Platoon has got to be the most realistic overall.
No one says Three Kings though

There are no real combat movies about Panama (just Docs AFAIK) and movies about the 1993 war are far more engaging.
Worked with a guy who did 2 or 3 tours in Vietnam and was also in Panama.
He said Panama was some of the worst combat he was ever in.

Hooah brother. Chilling at my brother’s house in BR. My elderly mom got hurt and was in rehab for a month. We just got her out yesterday. Long road ahead for her.
Don’t talk about this shite because I exploded on my favorite cousin when we went out to dinner the other night. Feel bad for her because she is so sheltered and does not understand. Mine is the other side of war though. After you have been thrashed to hell and back you are dumped on our doorstep with a wing and a prayer. frick all this shite.

My Dad was an Air Force pilot and got the Distinguished Flying Cross along with other medals from his tour in Vietnam. As far as movies go, he never watched anything that was set after WWII.

How long are you in town, man?
Posted on 3/27/21 at 10:20 am to upgrayedd
Probably until early to mid next week. Just getting her settled in with my brother. Then I have to head back to Tampa to finish up my retirement.
