I was working with the Nam vet I previously mentioned when we got snowed out one day, so about 6 or 7 of us went to the bar. The vet and his nephew, who worked with us, came along. After a couple hours of drinking and playing pool, the guy starts telling us a few stories of the war, nothing really of note. He ends up getting drunk and telling us how he got into hand to hand with a VC and he told us he ended up smashing the dude's windpipe with the but of his M-16. His nephew just looked at us and said he'd never heard him even mention anything like that. Dude was a hard arse lifer.

One story both dad and the Navy brother told me was about both their ships being at one of the island invasions in the South Pacific. A lot of Japanese planes in the air. Dad was working a 20 mm anti aircraft gun and was keeping an eye on his brother’s ship when he saw a plane go into the ship..
he yelled at the nearest officer to check on his brother. Don’t remember if it was the signal lights or the flags but he was greatly relieved when he saw “Ok brother” flashed from the ship a good while later.

Because Lurtrell’s story is highly fabricated.
I hate to say it, but I have arrived at this conclusion as well.

I’m asking as someone that doesn’t know anything about the military world, what makes y’all come to that conclusion?

I have read reports that it was not as many Taliban as depicted in the movie, that he was not in a fight at a village like at the end of the movie, and the mission was doomed from the beginning. Also, he was not on death’s door as the movie portrays. Hollywood takes major liberties with “based on” actual events. But that is as the movie relates to what actually happened. Haven’t read his book.

Either way, that man saw and went through more hell than I would ever conceive. Not to diminish what the man went through.

I assume there wasn’t much appetite to check the facts?

I have looked into it extensively. And there are concerning aspects of the story that have been told. At the end of the day, three of our brothers died. So I will keep my thoughts to myself. I do not want to dishonor their memories.

Agree WolfHound. Well said.

So to come full circle it looks like we have had some combat experienced soldiers (again, thank you ALL for your service coming from a guy you went into combat for that you don’t even know) chime in on some suggested movies. I will check them all out. Thanks guys.

All of this. Had a friend in the Marines. He survived Fallujah, but couldn't survive surviving.

My Uncle, who was awarded the Bronze Star and medal of Valor in Vietnam, said Platoon was very realistic - except for the drugs part, that is.

They Shall Not Grow Old seemed pretty realistic according to my father in law.

The movie took a different turn than the book once he was on his own from what I remember of both. That's all I know about the accuracy of the story
