All I know is she said it was cheaper than diamond
But I don't actually see their finances. Maybe she was just playing it off like a deflection.

Not really. It’s no different than investing in gold.
To my knowledge, no nation has ever pegged its currency to diamonds. Even South Africa. As noted earlier, the ridiculous value on diamonds is a fairly recent thing, less than a century old, not a cultural tradition, but an astroturfed Madison Avenue campaign.
When things go to hell again and empires fall... and they always eventually do... it'll be gold, once again, that's the standard for value. I'm not a gold bug, but its hard to argue with human history. Humanity, for whatever reason, has always equated that shiny yellow metal with wealth.

Try selling it for that.
was going to post the same thing. Buddy of mine who makes plenty of money bought his first wife about a $25k ring. They got divorced in about 2 years. She was decent enough to return the ring, but he only got about 1/2 what he paid for it from the same place he bought the thing. They'll probably take the diamond off the setting and sell the same stone to someone else at full price.

Nope. I know something of this. You are lucky to get 30% value and 20% is more likely. First, the ring as jewelry isn't what they are buying. They strip out the stones and melt the ring. So it is valued at its spot metal price. Then they buy the stones from you at BELOW wholesale because they are going to turn around and sell the stones to a retailer at wholesale. There is a TON of mark up on diamond jewelry. Buddy is currently trying to sell a $25,000 appraised ring with a 1.8 carat center stone and some smaller stones. The best offer he has gotten, due to the market being down with COVID issues, is $4500.

Pretty much meaningless unless you want to throw it in the ocean and claim the insurance.

There is no question the market for diamonds is a "scam" that said I bought an extravagant ring for my wife because that is what she wanted and it is to this day her favorite material possession in the world. We picked the stone out together and she designed the ring, it makes her happy and the rest is mainly irrelevant to me. She bought me a watch for our wedding and spent a similar amount of money, the watch makes me happy. As far as value the PP 5070 she bought me is worth more than she paid, her ring is worth less than I paid due to the manipulated market. The secondary market for diamonds is crap compared to the retail market. Again it makes her happy and that is all I care about, the amount of money I have spent on hobbies over the years leaves me no room to talk.

A 1200 lb diamond that you have to feed and muck it’s stall 2x/day that will buck or rub you off on a tree, kick you and bite you...cool.

I love Ron White's take on the whole diamond industry when he was talking about the newest diamond company slogan.
"Buy her a diamond and render her speechless" and he decided it truly means "Buy her a diamond------that'll shut her up".

Appraised and market value are two very, very different amounts when it comes to precious stones. The gold or platinum value of the band, however, can be easily monetized.

Seems about right. Paid about $3500 for my wife to be in 1991 and we got a deal from her cousin. Today’s dollars would be $7200 with inflation.

My wife is the gem, she bought a 35 dollar CZ off Amazon she proudly wears everyday. She can give a dissertation on the diamond engagement ring scam snd fixed price diamond market.
