Exactly what year did the tip go from standard 15% to 20%?

At least 15 years ago, boomer.

I remember 18% being standard tip in 2000-2005, now 20% makes you look cheap.

How the frick is this news?
Because it gets posted to social media and goes viral.

Although in this case, it appears that the person who originally posted it was being truthful. Server and the manager who tried to help cover it up should probably both be fired.

ETA: Pre-Facebook, probably only a handful of people that Mr. Washington tells the story to personally ever know about what happened.

The tipping on takeout is the new hurdle. Not even sure why someone should, but it seems expected.

Also with the covid shite many places are operating like McDonalds where I have to order at the register then basically bus my own table. One local place is adding 20% automatically for that type of setup.

Yes, and selling insurance doesn't constitute having a "finance background".

It’s reality. Why should they get the benefit of the doubt without proof?
Now the restaurant has acknowledged it and they got their apology. Everyone’s happy

I don't remember standard ever being more than 15%.

18% was always ridiculous. How the hell am I supposed to figure that out after 2 old fashions and a bottle of wine?

I feel as if 18-20% has been the standard for quite a while, with consensus falling more toward 20% these days.

With the new ipad autocalc options I have seen more people move towards 18/20/25 options. Seeing 15% as a preset option doesn't seem that common.

You lack comprehension skills or you didn't read the article. Nice try though.

I used to get autograted fairly often for a two person table back in college. I wasn't black (I'm still not) but I fit the young broke college kid stereotype at these nicer restaurants.

I don't think I ever made the news, but it did usually work out in my favor. Back then it was 15-18% on pre-tax amount, and I was a standard 20% of total bill tipper.

I'll admit I have never heard about 18% tip.. I have always done the easy way.. Figured 10% and double it (round up to the whole dollar).. No reason to make it complicated.
