Did you read the story? The server and the manager admitted that this is EXACTLY what happened.

If you have the facts, that's it, case closed.

Agreed. And No, I didn't read the story. I honestly have grown very tired of these stories.

So instead of asking them to remove the tip, they decided to become martyrs?

Yeah, right.

So the next time my bill is inaccurate, I can just make a big scene and call Action 9 News about it? I didn't order any damn potato skins! WTF kind of racist statement are they making? And the waiter put a smiley face on my receipt? Is she making a pass at me? Harrassment!

I detest places that have automatic tips. Gives no incentive for the person to do an exceptional job. Usually places that do that shite, have a standard of poor service.

Sorry I have to side with the black couple in this situation.
Stupid arse move by the employees by doing it and then lying about it.

It's not a "wokeness" thing, it's a power thing.

shite, the victims of this episode gain absolutely nothing from this except an apology, and fr33mator is throwing a fit because power was exchanged from white to black

I'll admit I have never heard about 18% tip.. I have always done the easy way.. Figured 10% and double it (round up to the whole dollar).. No reason to make it complicated.

This. Unless there was something extraordinary about the service in either a good or bad sense, I do the same. It's simple.

18% was always ridiculous. How the hell am I supposed to figure that out after 2 old fashions and a bottle of wine?

Oh yeah, the rush to post it on Facebook shows they just wanted an apology.

I'm not a fan of it either.

From the sounds of it on this board though, IMO people are not really being fair to servers when this happens. Unless shite has changed since I waited tables in college, it was never my option to add the auto-tip, it was on parties of 6 or more, I imagine that's still the norm in some form or fashion.

If you normally tip 20-25%, and the restaurant auto adds 18% and you decide that's all you're tipping, that's fine, it's certainly not a huge deal. But I'd just add that you're tipping the server less than you normally would for something that I don't think generally speaking the server has anything to do with it and it isn't their call.

You should check out his facebook, it's linked in the nola.com article.

I'll be stunned and eat crow if he files a lawsuit.

Most places in LA, the sales tax is around 9 percent, give or take. Take the tax and double it, and round up. Good enough even after your drinking.

I recently stayed at a casino. My host gave me a food and beverage comp. Ordered a bottle of booze to the room. Bottle showed up, in hand with two plastic cups on top. I didn't read the ticket, and tipped $5 for walking it up to my room. Checked out the next day, and was surprised to see that a 20% tip was automatically added and was not included in the comp.
