Anecdotal story but I was eating at a mid-tier restaurant a couple years ago with my parents and we had the same waiter as a black couple next to us, he was polite and attentive, great server. Anyway, the couple pays in cash and asks the waiter if he has change for a $5 bill. They proceed to pay in cash down to the penny. The waiter had a look of dejected resignation as he picked it up. We tipped him cash to try and lift his spirits a bit but it’s got to be demoralizing.

A good example of why restaurant help should be paid what they are really worth by the employer, and why the extra costs to the employer should be passed on to the customer by way of the check,
Then if I wanted to tip I could provided I felt the service was up and above the call of duty. Now my tip probably wouldn’t be as large as it would be now, but even if I thought the service was so so at least the server was paid by his employer more fairly.

And the article posted doesn't have any quotes from the waiter or the manager. That's really poor reporting and was likely done on purpose too push the narrative.

Since no other black people were getting the same treatment as this couple, I'm thinking they were not good customers. And that's why the waiter added in grat. Did race play a role? Possibly/probably. But assuming race was the only factor means we are assuming something about the waiter, which is racist to assume.

This is true. My ex used to wait tables and said the Sunday after church crowd was pretty bad. She called them Cats, Christians Against Tipping.
I also went to lunch with a couple of Hispanic guys from work one day, between the two of them their bill was about $50 dmvs they left no tip. I had already paid my bill with my card so I threw down the only day I had on me, only $6. Still a shitty tip. The server wound up adding a 1 to my tip to get an extra $10 dmvs I wasn't even mad, just wish I would have realized it.
But I've also had black people tell me that black people are bad tippers, including themselves.

I would like to take this opportunity to demonstrate my spinelessness and at the same time, drive my disposable- income-to-burn customers away at a geometric rate, which should do wonders for muh profit margin.
