There were rumors of this stuff going back to the his early days at LSU. It isn't a shocker. There are people here who definitely know.

the media used to observe some sort of unwritten protocol to stay away from/turn a blind eye to that sort of activity

because the local media relies on LSU for access. if you report something and get your press credentials yanked, you’re of no use to your employer anymore.

this is all OK to “report” now because a national newspaper did the releasing

As is media keeping it hush hush till it's convenient to out them.

I don't mind this because at least they erred on the side of caution as opposed to airing or publishing something not based on any concrete evidence or court documents but instead on hearsay and rumors, no matter how prevelant and credible-sounding they may be (which seems to happen far too often these days in the media). With all the NDA's written in and the chance for these girls to lose their settlement if it's leaked, evidence was probably tough to come by. If they were sitting on it with evidence tho, that's a different story

Why didn’t LSU use this to not pay his buyout?

LSU probably helped him facilitate a payout & such.

People were surprised when Les was canned, the results + off the field liabilities made that a quick and easy move.

Huh? He was literally almost fired less than twelve months prior. And before the attempted 2015 firing, there was a month of national speculation that he was going to be let go. I don’t think anyone was surprised when he was actually fired.

I think it’s coming out now as a way to defect scrutiny from the current staff’s problems.

Alleva was such a bad hire for this university
He was bad at Duke to begin with yet still got the job

Media was surprised and chastised us for wanting too much, half the fanbase was upset and blamed all of the negative fans (TD)... don't know what selective memory you have there.

Maybe that's a perceived perk depending on who you are, but I think that if they had something concrete that they could report on after Les' firing, I'm pretty sure it would've come out. It's not like they were tied to Les at that point, especially Jordy.

edit: Thinking further about it, I suppose that Alleva may have some reason to keep it quiet so that he didn't face criticism for not letting Les go sooner, but I'm not sure if I totally buy it. Plus that hypothetical report could've come out right after Alleva was let go as well as further justification.

this is kind of par for the course, and has been forever, for coaches and politicians
So Miles was a lech who also happily pretended he might go to Arkansas to leverage an even bigger contract despite his horrible incompetence? Does that finally put to bed the "he might not be the best Xs and Os guy, but he is of great character" trope?

best friend from HS is a retired sports writer from the Picayune, was with them close to 35 years, before taking that job he was with the Advocate for a couple of years, he said they had to walk on eggshells when it came to covering/writing about LSU, as if LSU was almost the editor prior to printing

Eh, i blame that more on alleva. Its not a coincidence thatTrent johnson, les miles, and paul mainieri all flirted with other schools...its because of a lack of a relationship with the AD.
