Mullet as table fare

I just caught enough nice size mullet in the cast net to make a good meal. Growing up I was always told that mullet were trash fish and no good to eat. I've heard more recently that mullet in Louisiana are not good because of the muddy water, but Florida mullet are ok because the water is cleaner. In Mississippi (muddy inshore) they call it Biloxi Bacon. I've never eaten it, but I'm curious. Any of you baws eat mullet?

I remember as a kid one of my dad’s favorite fish was boiled or baked channel mullet.

I moved to Georgia 35 yrs ago . I had mullet at a fish fry the first week I was here. I spit out the first bite and have never had it again! Nasty!

Fry them. Clean all the mud out and soak in milk for a couple hours. Used to enjoy eating them. The old lady I stayed with when I was a kid forbade me from bringing them fish in her her house.
Then again I thought garfish was the best tasting fish there was. Choupique in potato hash was mighty good and gaspergou court-bouillon was awesome. Haven't eaten any of those in 45+ years, my memory may be failing.

One year we rented a house in Cedar Key Florida when we went to a LSU - Florida football game in Gainesville. Smoked mullet was very popular there. I tried it at a couple of places and enjoyed it.

I can confirm this. Trash here but a delicacy in Florida. Tastes as good as anything else.

Fried mullet was good growing up in Florida. Smoked mullet is great.

Where you caught them? Closer to clean salty water the better they are. My buddy came fishing with me and we caught a couple on piece of worm under a cork fishing for perch. He kept them to fry, said he eats them all the time.

As others have said channel mullet or whiting is very good and one of my top five fish to eat. If you caught them in a cast net then you prolly have “Popeye” mullet. I grew up gillnetting mullet gasp I know I should go to hell for killing all the speckle trout!! All of the Florida Gill netters who fished ate mullet from only Breton sound or deep water mullet from clean water an they grew up eating them. They claimed that the mullet in the bays and marsh tasted like mud.
Where did you catch them? could you see 5ft down? If not I would bet they are no good.

My MIL loves smoked mullet. I don't eat it because I was always taught it was "trash fish".

I can only offer an opinion on Florida mullet. Excellent fried fresh or smoked, and I ate too many to count with my mediocre cast net skills off our dock. I never knew anybody who tried to freeze them.

My dad always described it as really oily. Will be interested in what you think of it

Why waste the best crab bait?

If you caught the mullet in muddy brackish water I wouldn't waste my time
Target the hardheads in those waters if you want to eat trash fish that taste good

You can fry just about anything and say it's good.
Had 'em smoked.
Harder to clean. I'd say "they're ok". Give 'em a try and report back!

My father and brother's favorite fish. But they get them from the local fish market so we may not be talking about the same thing....we are from east Georgia.
They fry them just like any other fish. They are oily, rich, and have a very strong "fish" taste about them.
Not my thing, but that the people that like them love them.
