Major losses in excess of $2 Billion for MLS

Not such good news from Garber today
LINK
Not good for a league that already operates in the red
The lack of a really good TV deal probably is a big factor
Other leagues still getting paid big bucks on TV money even with the pandemic
Also the single entity is probably hurting the league in this too, having your own kit deal can help offset some losses and having to share ticket revenue money is probably fricking clubs over taking on the losses of everyone else
MLS has become kind of an afterthought in the American sports scene

In December, Garber claimed that MLS sustained a $1bn drop in revenue in 2020, though league sources later amended that statement to "nearly $1bn" in losses. "We are forecasted to lose pretty close to $1bn, if not $1bn, that we have been talking about," Garber said about 2021. "When you don't have fans for the majority of your season, it's just pure math. So that being said, our owners have been very, very focused over a long period of time to build a league. But they're their resources are not unlimited. We've got to drive revenue. We've got to think about new ways to approach our business."

I wrote off MLS and gave my ducats away to business contacts once Portland tacitly started allowing ANTIFA banners in the ultras section

ultras
I don’t think you understand or know what that means

I mean, they make a lot of revenue from the gate so covid has definitely hurt. I think they’ll be ok though. And they just extended the current CBA and kept player salaries the same (no cuts) which is more than many leagues can say.

If you think MLS teams have real ultras

I'd argue that the Timbers Army is more politically active and radical than any current fan brigade in Western Europe (UK, Spain, Germany) or North America. If they had the same activities but were conservative instead of liberal they'd have already been classified as a "hate group" by SPLC.

Mate I have up my season tickets after AU refused to play

Not that it really matters, but that passage (I just skimmed the article) doesn’t make it sound like it’s two billion
ETA: got it now w/2020 and projected 2021

Yea it had some momentum 4-5 years ago.
Now seems pretty stale

Personally, I can’t support a league where it holds teams back from acquiring players due to a salary cap that is so low. I know DP’s full salary don’t count against the cap but those middle tier players are what separates MLS and Liga MX.
It’s tough to watch a great player held back by a couple of scrub players that hold a place in the team just because they are cheap. Last, there is no reason to cap international spots in a league where they have so many teams. If it was a 20 team first division league I could understand but it’s about to be 30 teams. We don’t have enough good players to support 10 teams

And it’s not like MLS academies are producing great players for the league
All the quality ones bounce before they are 21

I don’t see this as a problem. I’m ok with MLS becoming a springboard/selling league to Europe.

It’s very true
The quality kids leave first chance they get right out the academy
Or after a season or two of first team
Not good for sustainment for a league that wants to be top 5 but has a ton restrictions that hurt the quality of play.

It isn’t
The Brazil and Argentina model is what MLS needs to strive for

It was a big deal here in NY first couple seasons
Then it just fell off.

It's really not that bad since anyone with a green card counts as a domestic player.

To at least make you have a few Americans/Canadians on the roster? So you don't just bring in 10 foreigners in 1 window? To again make teams put their academy to use?
The league wants to limit the number of foreign players, but US law prohibits them from counting green card holders as foreign players. It's kind of a loophole that they can't do anything about.
