Moving to Anchorage, AK - what do I need to know

Paging Roger.
Just got the call I’m heading to JBER for the next 2-3 years. Be taking the family up this July. It’s my dream assignment location and only took me 14 years to get it.
Looks like they have sweet deal for military hunting/fishing licenses and tags so I’ll be investigating that.
I have a Tundra and a Sequoia, both 4-wd. Do I need to put a topper on the truck?
Cant think of what else I should ask right now, still pretty much in shock.
...it’s a 4,000 mile drive from Shreveport hahaha

Might want to take a jacket

Awesome, congratulations

It’s 6 degrees there right now with a -8 WC and snowing. Summers should be awesome but FT winter.

From my limited experience with Alaska (2 week vacation) skeeters in the summer can be worse than Louisiana.

Isn’t the boarder closed? Can you even drive up?

It's cold, baw.

Nah, some people do that. I didn't with my Chevy. I don't think it is necessary.

I did the drive from Denham Springs, it's a fun trip.

You’re gonna need a bigger gun.

I would think a bed cover would be mandatory. And I really question whether a Roll-N-Lock type system which is my favorite would even work up there without freezing up.

Umm I’d say for sure bring a thermacell and a lighter

When you're hiking out and about in the wilderness, don't bother carrying any sidearm smaller than a .45 ACP. Grizzly bears won't go down with a 9mm.

Anchorage is as close as you can get to Alaska without actually being in Alaska. Seriously though, If you are going to be here for 3-4 years plan on exploring the areas outside of Anchorage. Lots of good cross country skiing, fat tire biking, etc in Anc, Lots of petty crime so make sure you don't keep valuables in your car. I would also look into getting a Garmin Inreach for the family. It was one of the first purchases I made after arriving.
If you have the option to take the ferry from Washington do it. Studded tires are a good idea as well.
Congrats on the move. I spent my first winter in Anch while waiting on the spring when I could actually have my items moved. I spent most of my time around the Eagle River Nature Center and down around Girdwood. Does your wife work? Looking for a job?

I think they’ll consider you a resident, so get the Dall Sheep, Grizzly, and Moose tag.
Don’t look back and wish you’d hunting those animals when you had the chance.

I've made that same drive, get ready for a blast. Incredible trip. Taking the ferry or driving the highway?
Anchorage is like any mid size city in the country, except it has mountains, lots of moose and bear.
Read up on bears and moose and the proper way to deal with them. You'll definitely need that.

Artic Roadrunner, cool place to eat. Go and do lots of exploring. Beautiful place, especially once you get out of the city.
