Got to fly on a B-17 back in 2010. It was awesome. That plane is very graceful. It doesn't 'bounce' through turbulence. Just kind of floats and sways. Anyone who has ever ridden in a big old 1970s Cadillac knows what I mean.

It was amazing! Got to crawl all over, watch fly-by-wire in action, climb into each turret, sit in the tail, the works. We flew for about an hour around Galveston Bay. The roar of the engines was incredible. It would damn near rattle your teeth out of your head on the runway, but once you got off the ground, it was smooth as silk. Just an incredible machine, and one that has always been at the top of my list of favorite aircraft.

Lone Star Flight Museum
Took the Stearman flight for a Father's Day gift. I'm not sure what they are flying the B-17 during Covid.

That's not the real Memphis Belle. She is a museum piece and not air-worthy. That is actually a -G model converted to the -F for the movie of that name.

Almost 13,000 B-17 were produced for the war effort. Of those only 46 survive and only 10 are air worthy. In 2019 one of the few air worthy planes. Nine o nine crashed and killed 7. They used to do the honor flights with them here and they are amazing to see flying. However, I am torn because there are so few of them left and any loss of them is a huge loss to history.

A few weeks ago we took the short trip out to the Wendover Air Base and toured their small museum. This is where the B-29 crews trained for the Atomic missions over Japan to end the war. It was a fascinating place, and, in my opinion, worthy of Nation Historic Site preservation by the NPS.

Beautiful airplane, one of my all time favorites. Crazy to think that close to 30,000 of our boys were killed in these lumbering giants in the skies above Germany. The casualties sustained by the 8th airforce during WWII surpassed to the total number of casualties for the entire marine corps in the Japanese theater.

Unfortunately this plane crashed and killed several people last year after suffering engine troubles.

I got a chance to see it in person several years ago and took a flight on their B-24 with my grandfather who flew them during WWII. Pretty incredible experience, amazing to think they recruited a bunch of 18-22 year olds most who had never been on a plane before and trained them to fly combat missions in these planes.

B-24 has 12 levers 4 throttle, 4 turbo, 4 mixture and during take off roll the pilot held the yoke with one hand as the two of them controlled all 12 levers, mind-boggling to watch. And yes it feels like riding in a beer can with wings and a shitload of horsepower.

I knew they had restored her, so I thought they made her airworthy too. Well, to correct my previous post, that is a sort of replica of a legendary B-17.

My dad was in the 8th Air Force and flew in a B-17 in WW ll. He made all of his missions and finished the war as a member of the Lucky Bastards Club.
