Make sure to live out all of your childhood goals through your son as you failed to achieve them while you were young.

If you just built it and handed it to your son, then that sucks. As long as you let him help and taught him what y’all were doing, and why y’all were doing it, then I’d say that’s the whole point.

My den - I mean my kids’ den - had this rule. My car - I mean my kids’ cars - killed the competition. Then, we went to the regionals and railrunning was allowed. I - We... won a total of one heat. The disappointment was overwhelming but I got over it.

Oh my how things have changed. I thought having a gunsmith family friend helping was a bit sketchy. Of course that was like 3 decades ago and I lost in the 2nd round.

My kid always finished middle of the pack, but he designed and built his own car.

Having 3 wheels touching and railrunning are two different things.

Also, you can use one car in den/pack meet and then a different car in regionals. The scout advances to regionals, not the car. At least that how we did it.

When my kids were in scouts you could definitely tell which kids had parents that were engineers.

I remember those days with my son. We still get a good laugh at our experience and defeat. We built an awesome looking car. Our weight was exactly right. We stepped up to the line thinking we were going to dominate. Unknown to us there were some dads who took this very serious. I think our car is still trying to cross the finish line. What a great memory.

Did your kid's car win overall Pack or just his Den...?

Don’t know anything about engineering or carpentry. I own minimal tools. I watched 5-6 YouTube videos on how to build a fast car. I borrowed a Dremel and other tools. Won the local derby and regional. It ain’t that hard.

We took 1st in division 2nd overall. 273 & change average. My scale was off car was only 4.8 I think that hurt us but overall fun.

Same as poster above. Watched a YouTube video. Got majority of weight 1” in front of back axle, polished axle on 3 wheels, minimal design. Built it about 4 hours before the race.

Our pack always had an adult division of the pinewood derby too. That way adults could get really competitive, while the scouts theoretically did more of the work on their own cars. It seemed to work out better, and some of the adults had some badass cars (artistic and fast).

Yeah, railrunning is pretty hard to stop since you can do it without bending the axles so much that your wheels aren't flat on the ground or need the 4th off the ground. It's more people don't read the rules and just make a car like Mark says to do and then have to hurry up and fix it to actually run in the meet, so it doesn't run quite right for railrunning.
