Just plinking around i shoot at 10 yards mostly. We go out to 20 to see what we can do sometimes.
I was wondering what distance you guys practice at? My buddy shoots at 5 yards. Never moves the target

Just depends on what I'm shooting.
I was sighting in a new reddot on my Sig P365xl on Monday and shot at 7yds.
Normally the shortest I shoot is 15yds. I have a couple of guns that I like to shoot further though (25yds) mainly my 2011 I built and my Delta Elite. Those are the two with the best triggers.

For practical defensive handgun practice (run and gun) usually within 10 yards.
For brushing up on the fundamentals, 15-25.

XP100 in 6.5CM, about 1100 yards

A long time a go when I could walk into any academy or Walmart and buy 100rd value packs I would set up beer cans at the deer camp and see how far I could constantly hit them. Shooting beer cans at 20yards makes hitting a ten ring at seven seem easy.
Now I just look at my pistols and carry a stick so I don’t have to waste a bullet on snakes!!!

Is 7yds pretty standard for sighting one in? Like 100yd set up for sighting in a scope on a rifle?
The reason I'm asking is I just got my first red dot for a pistol. So I've never done it. I got a Vortex Venom for my Canik TP9SFX. I've got it attached so now I just need to sight it in and have absolutely zero experience in doing so for a reflex pistol sight. TIA for any tips or tricks.

I used to be a member at an outdoor range. They also had a public range you could pay for day use, but being a member got you to a more private, members only set of ranges. They had falling steel plates set up at 10 yards, target stands at 5 and 7 yards. 2-3 people could shoot at once on each pistol range, and there were at least 3 or 4 of them. Targets are fine, but I pretty much always shot the plates. 6 of them mounted on a sawhorse, and a rope to pull to set them all back up. So mostly 10 yards when I went there. There's a nice indoor range real close to the house now, and the pistol part of the range has the paper target mounts that you can control how far out they go on a wire. Shooting small paper, I stick to 7 yards. Every now and then I'll go out to 20-25 just to see, but 25 yards with a pistol, I'm not very good at. Anything inside of 15 yards I keep it in a fairly small circle.

Who the hell can afford to waste ammo practicing and try and restock? I hate this sheet! Having withdrawals as guns collect dust, well those i didnt lose in that boating accident anyway

the one thing I've been shooting that is plentiful (ammo-wise) and affordable is black powder

The range I go to has them set up so I don't know what brand they are. These are a long rack of 5 and you reset them with a pull rope.
I see various types online like it.

Man if you're not shooting steel you're missing out. Its so much more fun than paper and easier than cans/bottles/etc.
For pistols just get any old steel pistol target with a stand. Or find a buddy to get you a 4" 150# blind flange from somewhere. Any target steel or heavy mild steel will work

no, it is just the closest that my range has available.
I don't have set of steps that take. I mount the site and use a bore sight laser to get it really close and then shoot it at the range to verify. Normally it doesn't have to be moved much if any after getting it bore sighted.
