Shawshank Redemption question (spoilers)

Caught some of this last night, and something stood out to me that I don't think I ever noticed before:
At the end, once Red is released he goes to the spot where Andy told him to go with the black rock. There he finds the letter and cash that Andy left for him. But the letter says something like "You remember the name of the town I told you about, don't you?" and Red says "Zihuatanejo."
I sat there last night and thought: But what if he didn't remember it? Would he have just worked at the grocery store and stayed in that little town the rest of his life, and Andy would've just assumed that Red either never got out or didn't go find the letter he had left for him?
And I get why he maybe wouldn't have said the name in the letter, just in case it was found by the authorities and they could put some pieces together. But I just laughed at the thought that Andy went through all that trouble to bring his friend along, and Red went through all the trouble to carry out Andy's request, only to not be able to meet up because Red didn't remember the name of some random town in Mexico that Andy told him about several years ago. And I don't know exactly how much time has passed between that talk they had and Red getting released, and then from his release to when he finds the letter. But I assume it was at least several years.

He would have bought a map and looked along the coast until it jogged his memory. Being in prison and not having much to do or look forward to, he most likely wouldn't have forgotten a paradise town he dreamed about with his best friend

Family Guy covered this

It's implied that Red never stopped thinking about what Andy told him about the Pacific Ocean. As he's on his way to Mexico he talks about how he hopes the Pacific is as blue in real life as it had been in his dreams. One could assume he has a vivid recollection of their conversation from years back.

Right, that's why he remembered it. I'm just saying if he didn't it would've been pretty funny.
I agree with you about getting a map though. Although who knows how easy it was in 1965 to find a detailed map of Mexico.

I don’t think you need to worry about spoilers for a movie that comes on 10 times a day

That's funny because my take was always similar but different. I would have remembered the name (but would have had no way to know it) but would have never, in a million years, found that god damned rock! He gave him crazy directions with no names, and we have no idea how long it was between the time Andy sort of mentioned that in passing and when Red finally got out and went to look for it. And obviously he never wrote any of it down.
Even to this day, after seeing the movie countless times, I can't recall the directions, but I'll occasionally have the name of the town pop into my head for no good reason!

Family Guy did this bit in their spoof of the movie. Cleveland couldn't remember the name and Peter ended up alone on the beach.

I watched this yesterday and AMC scrubbed the second part of the “Did I say you’re good?” line. No “shite you’re Rembrant”.
It gave me Forest Whitaker eye.

I never understood why Andy goes to the warden who he knows is a crook with Tommy's story instead of writing the legislature or ACLU?

That and the fact that Andy is a rich banker who could afford the best lawyer money could buy in 1946, and his lawyer told him to take the stand.
You don’t let your client take the stand in that case. Instead you do your best poke holes in the evidence and convince the jury that’s there’s a reasonable doubt Andy didn’t do it.

1. Never thought about that. But Red proved to have a good memory and surely Andy mentioned it a lot.
2.

2.

was it established that he was rich? Working at a bank in Portland Maine circa 1946 he is not necessarily pulling in an inflation adjusted 6 figure salary.

was that common strategy in the 40's? Also Andy may have wanted to take the stand. I hear you though

What if the tree Andy made love to his wife was cut down. Now that would have been my luck.

It’s stated in either the novella or the movie that he was the youngest VP in the history of whatever bank he worked at.
Regardless of whether he was the youngest, if he made VP, I’d say chances are good he was loaded.

Andy picked the town because the name is so different that Red would never forget it. He is a pretty sharp guy.

Yep.
For goodness sakes, it starts with a "Z", people.
