re: Nielsen looking less likely per Jane Slater

Didn't LSU allow the saints to use Tiger Stadium after Katrina did a number on the Superdome?
Seems like raising a ruckus about a DL coach moving up to DC at LSU wouldn't be a very neighborly way to return that deed.

This is nothing but Payton being approached about this issue within 24 hours of getting out-coached, losing out on bonus money, losing his QB to retirement, losing other coaches to NFL promotions, and making things worse, he probably had some of that green slim work its way into one of his cracks. Its been a bad week.

These assistant coaches all have contracts that allow them to get out of the contract for a promotion.
The dispute is whether a change to college DC is a promotion or not.
Payton thinks not.
It’s that simple.

If this is true, good luck to him getting any judge ever to agree with that in court.

Are you saying with the language or the disagreement? Because I don't think there is anyway the Saints can "block" this move
I'm saying the move CANNOT be blocked. It was posited that this was a non-compete, in that instance, the language is probably unenforceable. If there ar specific contract terms, They will have to litigate to collect.
Most likely is that he is negotiating to try to get LSU to pay any buyout terms. What will likely happen is that LSU will pay for legal fees and try to win in court or negotiate a reduced buyout, if they want him, which apparently they do.

How do you request permission to interview, get said permission to interview, then attempt to pull this "wait, not so fast" rabbit out of the hat. C'Mon Saints...

Has nothing to do with a non compete.

If they’re fighting this bc he’s in line to be DC if Allen were to take a head job in the near future, then have him put wording in his LSU contract allowing him to leave for a DC job in the NFL. I mean if that’s his overall goal then I’m sure that will be in there similar to what Brady had.

hat is absolute bullshite. There is absolutely zero way that this is the first time the saints are hearing about this when every swinging dick in the state knew Nielsen was the top target 30 seconds after Freeman signed with Notre Dame.
This.
Everybody who halfway pays attention to this stuff KNEW Nielsen was the guy O wanted with Freeman out.
Anyone from the Saints who says otherwise is completely and utterly full of shite. Maybe the ball boy didn’t know...and that’s probably debatable.

What is the language that’s holding it up

Bingo
Right. No one in the Saints org heard a word about this. Yet every jack leg with a keyboard did.
Sure.

For someone who supposedly negotiates contracts, you don't seem to be very clear about the process.

Sure they knew about it, but I’d bet money there was no formal request. Hence the Saints being sucks about it.

I thought Formal requests was an NFL thing. Like NFL teams need to ask.

Virtually all assistants in the NFL can get out of their contracts for a promotion.
Happens all over the league every year.
Peyton doesn’t think a college DC qualifies as a promotion.

It’s not up for subjectivity. So again, it will get ironed out.

It used to be an NFL rule that coaches couldn’t be in contact with other teams while their team was still playing. No idea if that rule applied to talking to colleges as well but I’ve also heard that that rule was done away with last offseason.
To be honest I’m not sure anyone knows what the frick is ok or not anymore.

Consult your local atty about how enforceable non-compete clauses are in La.
I'm not an attorney and I can answer that.
Non-compete clauses are not enforceable in right to work states (restraint of trade) UNLESS the person is employed under the terms of an employment contract.
I've been in sales for 2 decades and I've yet to sign one, even though every employer I've had in that time has put one in front of me. I respond by providing them an employment contract I've drawn up (I have some legal training via a paralegal degree) and tell them if they want me to sign theirs, they will have to sign mine. It's amazing how fast their non-compete goes away.
Anyway, since Nielsen is under contract, any non-compete language included is enforceable.
