Oh, dear God...if this is true, simply by what you have typed here then...wow.

Louisiana is really anti-non compete clauses. No way they would uphold one not allowing him to move to a college team with 0 direct competition.

I guess Is has to be some kind of buyout issue.

Are you suggesting this is a high number? Friend of mine gets $800 per month vehicle stipend and he works for a very small company.

I’d imagine they’re not paying anything out of pocket. $800/m may just be written in as language and they have a specific dealership LSU prefers to send the coaches to like Alabama sends their recruits.

But I get him being a prick, I mean Brees is done, you're losing an asst. GM, losing a great D coach, and lost Brady who is now coaching AGAINST you in the same division...so I understand the salty demeanor.

He’s had years to prepare for Brees leaving. The fact that his QB situation is... what it is... can only be blamed on the Saints organization. As for Brady and other coaches leaving, the Saints would be better served with contracts specifying coaching positions and locations for a certain period of time after leaving the org.

not necessarily but assuming that's giving both of them 50k to spend on a vehicle adds up to 100k just for their vehicles. shouldn't owe the saints much more than that a couple of times over. so them wanting compensation shouldn't be a problem.

The only thing I have typed here is call O a Goober and say it was foolish to interview someone without understanding the term provisions.

If LSU had permission, made the offer, Saints blessed it, and then Woodward said..."Wait, WTF?", then that would be on O.

How the frick would Ed know that the Saints would stonewall before he even asked for permission to talk with him?

The way I understand it. They had clearance to interview him but now there is a hold up in signing him because they may not allow him out of the contract. You tell me how that exudes competence. Unless I’m misunderstanding the order of events.

Yeah, because I’m sure that’s what happened.

Did you, specifically, negotiate contracts for athletic employees at LSU or the Saints organization?

That's how interviews generally work. Nielson probably wanted to keep it from the Saints until it was a sure thing. I don't understand your POV here.

Then that’s on Nielsen’s fricking agent for either not disclosing a potential hangup, or not knowing that it would be for the Saints. That’s his job and you can bet the house we were talking to him before now.

Ok so what’s the point of asking for permission to interview someone?

1. I doubt Payton is holding this up, this is coming from lawyers and people who work contracts. Not the head coach.

Very wrong.
My good friend is a coach with the Saints and when a request to interview is made, it goes directly to Payton and he has 100% say on whether to allow it or not. It has happened with my friend twice and Payton said no both times (contacting party was an NFL team, though).
That said, even if he allowed an interview, if the coach is under contract (and every single one of them gets re-upped by one year each year, so they always have either 1 or 2 full years in front of them) it's possible that said coach's remaining contract may have to be bought out.

Consult your local atty about how enforceable non-compete clauses are in La.

Assuming this is a non-compete.

Why assume it’s because of a non-compete?

Seems more likely that it’s buyout related. Which AFAIK has nothing to do with the enforceability of any non-compete.

In other words, either a) the Saints release him from his contract, or b) LSU (or Nielsen, technically) is on the hook to buy out his contract.

That’s assuming there’s not a carve-out in his contract which allows him to take a coordinator job without a buyout. I thought that type of carve-out was pretty common in coaching contracts, but maybe it’s limited to NFL coordinator jobs in this case.

Bc it was a requirement for Nielsen.

BTW, we don’t KNOW that LSU and/or Nielsen isn’t going to pay any required money owed for his Saints contract. We also don’t know what Nielsen’s agent did or did not disclose to O and LSU during the negotiation process.

You are making too many assumptions when you out the blame on O for this popping up at the end of this hiring process. First, it may not even be an actual issue and, second, any unknowns would almost certainly be the fault of Nielsen’s agent.

theoretically, all they'd have to do is restrict him from being a football coach in a set number of parishes (of which EBR would be listed) and it's applicable. why would the NFL/NCAA distinction matter?

When was he signed? Before Brady left? Why would they list parishes? If they did that he would be free to go to other NFL cities.

If they said "NFL organizations" well then it would not apply. If they said "football organizations", it would be too broad and unenforceable (1,000's of football organizations). This can be fought and won. Question is, does LSU want to? Might be easier to offer them 1/2 million to go away.
