Honest Discussion about Nielsen

With each passing day, it is looking more and more like he is O's guy.
Honestly, I don't hold his lack of play calling experience against him that much. I've posted a few times that it isn't as big of a deal as fans make it out to be.
My biggest hesitation is that O is a former DL coach and hiring a DL coach as DC. That means both your HC and your DC have the same specialty. That seems redundant to me. Especially with the poor linebacker and safety play last year.
Usually you hire for weaknesses.
I think the guy can really coach linemen! What he did with Bradley Chubb/NC State should be talked about more on here. Our DLine would be the strength of this program.
I might be talking myself into him here, but what are your thoughts?

We have room for another defensive coach - so we can get a LB coach and give safeties to Corey.
And the head coach shouldn't be a position coach. How often do you see that besides with the QB?
ETA:
I'm ok with the hire, but would really like if we get a LB coach as stated, especially one that has had any experience calling a defense or helping to call a defense. More minds in that room the better.

Nielsen, O, and Lacouture would have elite Dlineman coming to LSU. If Corey can go back to his recruiting of old and we get an elite recruiter at LB's coach to bring in top guys then I think I could call that defense into the top 25.

I'm not saying that O should coach a position. I'm just saying that his specialty is DLine. Usually managers hire for weaknesses.
I'm making an argument that when O was looking at Freeman(who coaches linebackers) that would fit because it's not a position he is knows very well.
It will be
Nielsen: DC/DL
Safeties
Linebackers
There are 3 coaches coming aboard.

We've always had a DL coach with O as HC. It won't be anything new. Also, we essentially have two receivers coaches in Mangas and Joseph. It worked out pretty well when it was Joe Brady and Joseph.

Nielsen with a good safeties and linebacker coach will crush it!

I keep seeing people post things along these lines, and I absolutely don't understand it. No matter what your head coach's "specialty" is, you have a position coach that coaches the same thing. The head coach isn't a position coach.
Saban was a DB as a player and a coach, as was Will Muschamp yet they coexisted on the same staff just fine. It's a non-issue.

I feel as though whatever CEO and Nielsen have discussed, Nielsen may already have a LB coach and Safety coach in mind he wants to work with. No way he go this long without a plan in place.

The only way I like this hire is if he’s Co DC with Corey Raymond. Because be honest.. D-line coach what does he know about coverage? In today’s style you have to stop the pass first. I’d feel better if I knew his scheme. It’s really a win win to promote Raymond to co DC with nielson. You have a veteran DB specialist as a curtain and you give him a well deserved Promotion

He has called plays at least. Took a team to a conference championship as DC.
More than Peetz.

Maybe I am wrong and thinking too much like a company.
If I run a company and I came up through accounting... I'm not going to hire an expensive accounting director.. because I can keep an eye on it myself.
I'll hire and pay more to departments that I don't know as much about.
That is my only thought here. Geez, you guys live in your feelings and shout down everything thought that you don't agree with...

Nick Saban's specialty is defensive backs. He hired Kirby Smart, also a DB coach.
Pete Golding, also a DB coach (although he coaches LBs now)
You are concerned about something that is not an issue.

yeah. I hope CR won the battle over the separation of the db/s rooms.

I really think that a safeties coach is redundant. Raymond is more than capable of coaching all DBs. With the importance of the DL in football today, particularly the flexibility required for the mixed fronts, I would rather see a DC focus on schemes (even if he has DL experience) while having a DL coach focus on the line.

I don't see anyone shouting you down, just engaging in "Honest Discussion about Nielsen".

I kind of like it, because O can then focus more on what he does best. That’s motivate and recruit. With the transfer portal and the new transfer rule in general, it’s going to be more important than ever to be constantly re-recruiting your own players.

LSU was going to have a d line coach next year no matter what. Did you think they weren’t? In this case the DC will do d line and they will hire a LB coach.

Nielsen is fully capable of building our D-Line like nobody else in college football.
With his ability to teach fundamentals, and recruit, our D-Line would be virtually unblockable.
He definitely knows what he is doing, and the proof of that is the saints D-Line for the entire time he has been there.
Nielsen is the guy I personally want to see become our DC, and always was the guy I hope we hire. He isn't hired yet though as far as we know, and missing out on him would be a tremendous disappointment.
