Clarion Ledger Article

quote:

Deion Sanders isn't in the NFL anymore. He's not even at Florida State anymore. He's in the SWAC, where he's discovering that all football programs are not created equal.

quote:

"The playing field is horrible," Sanders said. "It's not a level playing field. It's unacceptable. Thank God that God called me to change the game, to open their eyes, to open the door. Not just for Jackson State, but for everybody."

quote:

"I'm doing this for these babies, man," Sanders said. "They deserve it. The look in their eyes when they get a whole new sweatsuit just to wear back to the durn dorm. Shoes and looking the same when they get the helmets and the uniforms and all that stuff plays a tremendous role.

I applaud him for trying to make a change, but this is the real world. There are haves and have nots. How did you not know what you were walking into with that job?

I would like to point out in the article that JSU actually has an uneven practice field so kudos to the writer.

Maybe he means the field is literally uneven cause they can’t afford someone to mow it.

Deion has been rich for a very long time, he's probably out of touch with the reality of poor folks/schools

Not acceptable in their eyes. Hard work and effort mean nothing. We demand equity.

Could be worse. Winston-Salem State plays football in the infield of a NASCAR sanctioned asphalt track at Bowman Gray Stadium (The Madhouse). LINK

They drive and do figure eights all over that field.

He definitely knew he just speaking to let everybody else know. He will get the schools sponsors and donors for upgrades by speaking about it. He knows what he’s doing

lol what? Is it too much to ask for a college football program to have serviceable facilities?

The next step would be to make sure that the money isn't stolen before it's used for the intended purpose. That's been an issue at SWAC schools before.

A lot of schools have a field that is not level for drainage purposes. Not sure if that's what he saying but it's a very common thing. MSU had (has?) a soccer field that has a huge hump in the middle of it.

Well whip out your checkbook and make a donation. That’s up to the school and conference and done by budgeting. Also, this is done by fan support. This is a business at the college level. Not a charity.

How do you advocate them getting extra funding for these facility upgrades? MS taxpayers?

Because it sounded like he’s whining and insinuating that something needs to be given to them for free.

Is it a turf or grass field? That's an important question

Is Coach Sanders residing in Jackson? I wonder if he bought a house there.

They likely already have the means. Are you under the impression that leveling a patch of grass requires mass amounts of funding? I don't see this is whining at all. It is what it is. How is it supposed to be corrected if no one calls attention to it?

I mean yes there are haves and have nots but the fact a school can’t en get a fricking playing field level is pretty sad.

If your working conditions were unacceptable to you, would you bring it up to someone or would you just sit on your hands and mumble and groan about it and not do anything?

He’s doing everything he’s supposed to do. He’s being vocal and bringing eyes and ears to the program. Isn’t that what a college supposed to do?

I love everything Prime has done and said so far. I’m pulling for him to be successful being a game day coach. He seems genuine in what he’s doing.
