Or will the power continue to consolidate between a handful of schools?

From 1996-2010, you had true parity within the sport with the following teams staking claims to consensus national championships:

1996 - Florida
1997 - Nebraska/Michigan
1998 - Tennessee
1999 - Florida State
2000 - Oklahoma
2001 - Miami
2002 - Ohio State
2003 - LSU/USC
2004 - USC
2005 - Texas
2006 - Florida
2007 - LSU
2008 - Florida
2009 - Alabama
2010 - Auburn

Around 2006, however, you began to see a shift in the balance of power. The SEC became dominant in the sport at the expense of the other conferences. Even after that impressive streak of SEC national champions was broken in 2013, the balance of power in the sport remained firmly entrenched in the South. Ohio State is the only non-southern team to win a national championship since USC routed Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl in 2004-05. And since the advent of the CFP in 2014, the distance between the have's and the haves not's have only has only grown with no end to the trend in sight.

Will college football return to a "state of normalcy" once a certain head coach retires or have we reached a point of no return?

A better question is has there ever been parity in the sport outside of the time period you highlighted?

The stagnation in the CFP is due to the stagnation in the conferences. Every conference has one big cheese the other teams can't seem to dethrone.

Alabama has won the SEC 5 of the last 7 years.

Clemson has won the ACC 6 years straight.

Oklahoma has won the Big12 6 years straight.

Ohio State has won the BigTen 4 years straight.

The committee is putting the same teams in over and over again because of the above.

College football would be more interesting if teams like Texas, Michigan, Florida State, Tennessee, Nebraska, Penn State, USC began carrying their water again.

Depends on how you define it. the true pool of championship contenders has always been small, there's about 10-15 programs that win almost every single national title.

But if all 10-15 are good at the same time, it's fine.

There was never much parity dating back to the days of Harvard and Yale. If you’re asking if today’s dominant programs will ever loosen their grip, I don’t know but I could see some familiar powers rising up in the 2020s

Starting in 1980, the following teams won their first national championships (using the Poll Era as a reference) during this period:

1980 - Georgia
1981 - Clemson
1982 - Penn State
1983 - Miami
1984 - BYU
1990 - Georgia Tech/Colorado
1991 - Washington
1993 - Florida State
1996 - Florida

Compare that with the 1970s where the only team to win their first national championship ever was Nebraska in 1970. That was a blue blood decade if there ever was one.

If saban is still alive and has a healthy QB, then no, we will not see parity return to CFB

Honestly i think we are seeing the slow death of the Pac-12. Effectively eliminating an entire region from contention and lowering interest out West each year.

Totally agree. USC doesn’t give a rats arse about sports anymore. I guess Oregon and Washington still give a shite but like you said it is dwindling

Never been true parity. Open up the playoffs to more schools and there would eventually be a modest amount of parity. Start with a G5 auto bid/play in game.

This season C Carolina vs Cincinnati for the auto bid . Foregoing their conference Championship games. People hide behind " tradition " too much though. Fear change. See " Eyes of Texas"

But it’s harder for them to convince the best recruits because the best recruits want to make the playoffs.

It’s self fulfilling at this point

We have to drastically reduce scholarship numbers allowed on each team. Force the talent to be spread around more.

I'm talking major drop - like 85 to 65 or something.

And do it gradually like 5 a year

I would normally say "things are cyclical" but in this instance the interest and money are so heavily-weighted in the South and to a lesser extent, the Midwest. The new SEC TV deal with ESPN is only going to exacerbate the disparity. NIL may end up following the interest, which has a chance to widen the gap.

CFB desperately needs USCw (or Oregon as a lesser substitute) to be contenders, to at least maintain a semblance of national interest.

No one gives a shite about the AP. The BCS was the system used to determine champions.

LSU won the BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

USC claiming a title because of a poll is like Bama claiming a title from the 20’s because of the Wisconsin South West writers association poll.

An ongoing cycle of the best 17 year old recruits believing that their best/ only playoff hopes are through 5/6 schools.

Give the G5 schools an auto bid/ play in for now( until further expansion) and teams like Memphis / Cincinnati/ULL may have just as likely a playoff path . Maybe easier in some cases. 3-5 P5 auto bids for their Champions/ G5 play in & a few At Large.

Other schools would become more attractive destinations.
