Radar Detector

Going to have to do a lot of driving over the next few years (kid going to college in other state) so I purchased a Uniden R3. This was after researching them and this one seemed to be a decent one for the price. I should get it tomorrow. I've already been using waze on trips but there are still a lot of unmarked areas where probably internet isn't avail so people can't tag the police.
Here's a statement and then a question:
I'm not trying to become a super speeder weaving in and out going 100+. But I can't stand driving in clumps of traffic so I do what I can to get ahead of the clump. I've had some close calls just getting away to decide on purchasing a detector.
What else are y'all doing outside of driving like a granny in the left lane?

I didn't even know they still made radar detectors. I only use Waze these days, but I don't go on many road trips. But when I do, I do drive like a bat out of hell. I've had a lot of good luck over my lifetime and gotten very few speeding tickets. But for most interstate travel these days, I think Waze is going to have you covered 80-90% of the time.

Waze is good for warnings ahead of speed traps, but only if other users tag it. I used to always keep my radar detector in the truck, and only used it on trips. Haven't used it in years, and just keep my cruise set at 80 on the interstates and a hair above 70 on major highways where the limit is 65. I've seen more people stopped on highways than interstates. The only times I see people stopped on the interstate is where it runs through a town and they set up on the overpass and have cops lined up the entrance ramp to run speeders down.

They are mostly useless now... so many cars have passive radar for blindspot detection that operate in the same band...drove from NOLA to DFW and the thing staying in "alert" 85% of the trip.. promptly tossed it in the junk bin.

Higher end models filter out that noise.

I use Waze and a radar detector daily and travel through multiple states every week. My radar detector saves my arse all of the time. Your assumption is correct that there are areas that Waze is not very useful. Remember, someone has to be the first to see the cop and put it on Waze. Your radar detector will see him from miles out without you having to rely on someone else.

Those instant-on radars are hard to react to fast enough, LSP cars had one that would give a single beep if they hit a car ahead of you within a mile or so, best I can say is don't drive more than 10 mph over the speed limit, and do not exceed the speed limit at all in the small towns that you pass through!

Incorrect. JBV1 can eliminate any pass throughs that V1G2 allows in.

Buy a laser jammer but please understand that no radar detector with laser detection will provide you with adequate protection. The V1G2 has the best laser detection but since laser is instant on and barely 3 ft. wide at 1000 yards, the cop will see you first before you see (or react) to him.

The new ones have upgradable firmware that filter out all the passive radars. Also have gps to be able to mark certain areas that set it off so that it ignores that specific frequency in that specific area. I've got a drive over to Arkansas Friday so abt a 8.5hr drive to figure it out.
Fwiw, I finally figured out how to verbally report things on waze instead of having to do it manually which isn't safe.

That's the guy you want to be behind when you running a radar detector. Hang back far enough to keep him in site but but keep up

Yeah, I'm always scanning for brake lights on them, etc. I just wanted yet another level of awareness. I'm not anti-cop. I'm just anti-fund raising cop.

Back in my youth, driving with an Escort radar detector, we called those people hot switch bait. I would drive about the limit until one blew by, then I fell in behind and watched the Escort and their taillights.

Yikes.

Uniden R3 is solid. One of the longest range detectors on the market. Had it for over a year before I upgraded to the R7 which has arrows letting you know the direction of the radar source.

waze app
Waze app + Detector is much better.
Waze does nothing for moving radar or where there are no users to mark police such has state highways, back roads, etc.
