re: Why are people so secretive about their salaries?

I agree.
We are taught to never talk about money. That only benefits the wealthy. Education about earning and savings is essential to building wealth. Money is only a taboo subject because it benefits the rich.
Same principle applied to salaries. It allows the company to pay someone less than they are worth.

If you got a payout from the government for Covid, you are a peasant. That’s your own government’s definition of you.

I was embarrassed about my salary when I was young and poor.
I was fortunate to work my way up over the years, and now I’m embarrassed my salary is higher than most.

For the bosses, yeah. It’s hard to explain why one person makes more than another other than “life isn’t fair”. Especially in the corporate world.

You answered your own question in your OP.
How do you know who was deserving or not, you were just an intern?

A few years ago, the National Labor Relations Board opined that sharing salary and wage information cannot be banned because employees protected by the NLRA (mostly non-management) have the right to share information without retribution so long as it is "concerted activity."
So, if the employees are getting together to fuss about pay, their right to share pay information is protected.
Note: There are exceptions to NLRA coverage of employees other than the supervisory exception.

People don't need to know about my 550K annual salary.

I always thought it bred unnecessary hostility in the work place amongst salaried individuals. I've had tenured direct reports that did the bare minimum and depended on longevity for raises. I've also had direct reports that busted their asses for raises and bonuses. Sometimes those people were on the same level. Capitalism rewards those that create the most value. If you're unhappy you have the ability the find a new profession that will reward you.
Unfortunately there's alot of people these days the feel the need for more reward for less work.

I used to think it was a good idea. I mean why not do it. Then the person that I shared the info with turned into a jealous little bitch over every little thing that happened in the office, so I'll never do it again and I now understand why you don't talk numbers with coworkers.

When I graduated college late 80's the economy was at the bottom of a cyclical downturn (you guys are all familiar with gas/oil cycles, the whole economy has similar events). A few years later company new hires were starting much higher than I was at the assistant branch manager level.
Since I was literally carrying my branch office I demanded a raise. The Regional Manager refused. I quit on the spot. In 3 months they closed that branch for being non competitive/productive.
Meanwhile I took a manager position at another company and started a program there that was profitable for 3 other people to perform and continue for another 7 years after I left for yet another more favorable management job.
The thing that scares people about $ and jobs that most don't realize, there will always be another dollar and another job. May have to search for it, but they're always printing more $ and someone somewhere is always creating a new way to grab a handful of it.

It’s not that they’re “secretive” it’s that it’s personal and no ones business but you and your boss. If you don’t see the issue on why that idiot got fired then somethings wrong.

That’s my business. Growing up I never knew how much my parents make but I know they did well. They refused to talk about their salaries and finances in general. I respected that and will do the same to my kids.

This makes him sound a bit like a manipulative control freak who would be a nightmare to work for.

I’m secretive about my salary because I know I got a leg up over people who have been there longer than me due to the product I produce.
Not worth the bitching and moaning To HR by the entitled and bitter dead weights and the subsequent headaches to myself and those who went to bat for me.
Also, this. In my experience when things are going well, people will dip further down on the pettiness ladder to find something to complain about.
My personal favorite was someone who was bitching how much money I was making due to overtime.
Immediately offered to back down (because I WAS getting a lions share of it in spite of continually letting others get first grabs). Person immediately backpedalled and said they didn’t want the time. They just didn’t feel like one person should get the time and the money.
Never mind that I was only getting it because others would rather stay home and I volunteered.
Causes an HR enforced rotation for a time, which now made everyone unhappy because everyone was losing more weekends. Including the original complainer.
All because one person bitched....not to get something for themselves but just because some people aren’t happy unless they are bitching.
Why give those people additional ammo?

Because its none of your goddamn business. If someone goes into a neighborhood and decides to rob a house.. which one are they going to rob? The one that looks like it has then most valuables or the house that looks modest that might seem to not have many valuables in it? That's why you don't go around telling people your salary.
The same people that say my salary is none of your business strive to have the biggest house in the nicest neighborhoods so they can say look at me I obviously make a lot of money.

It was tough as hell for me to work for him, that’s why I’m a pilot. lol
ETA: I never really knew the reasoning behind that policy but he was a great man and could be a tough to work for, as I’m sure most entrepreneurs are, but he was also very compassionate and any employee could come to him in time of need, no matter what that need may be.
