Because the salary amount and the brain power are so incredibly different that you’d stab yourself

You would be 10% wrong.

I'm retired now but during my working years it was frowned on if not forbidden to discuss salaries. What I learned over the years is that the only way to make salaries equitable is to make them public or discuss them openly. Companies play extreme favoritism toward individuals and then hide behind some made up confidentiality statement in a personnel handbook. Employees should know why their counterpart is worth more or less than they are and companies should be required to explain it. Women will always be underpaid as long as salary knowledge is protected. I saw it every time I had to do appraisals. I don't want to get started on my soap box.
While I see there could be some merit to this I have to wholeheartedly disagree overall. Way more damage can be had than good with this tact.

It's not illegal if you are an at-will employee and they don't voice it as a reason for terminating you.

Impressive. I wish mine was near that high.

I earn a pretty good a salary but I'm an idiot with money and ADD. I forget to pay bills sometimes. Have a couple blemishes on my credit that aren't major delinquencies but my credit score sure thinks they are. Sheesh.

General philosophy is that your pay isn’t going to change, so what generally happens is that you get pissed someone is paid more than you or vice versa if you start finding out check amounts.
