had a high school classmate choke to death at a restaurant in Marrero...this was before the Heimlich
I remember he passed away a little over 4 years ago. It was the day after my birthday and I had off from work and remember seeing it on some news channel and never knew who invented it until then. I know, CSB.

This thread has me freaked out, I'm going to be chewing my food for like ten minutes the next few weeks. These stories always seem to be someone who is away from people for a few minutes. I remember my mom talking about somebody in her teaching circles whose son died on a piece of pizza in his bedroom.

Yes, a coworker died about 5 years ago from choking on some food.

Yes. Coworker died choking on a hot dog during a lunch break. Really unfortunate. He was in his late 50s.

I know a guy who choked on some Turkey at Thanksgiving. Died right at the table in front of his family. Several others on here know him too.

Was eating lunch with a coworker one day in a busy restaurant and all of a sudden wheezing really loud and spit out his food on his plate. He could barely breath. I was about to help him somehow but he started shaking his head like no no no. I can't remember exactly what it was but basically food could get stuck and block his airway, though he can still just barely get air in. Waitress came over afterwards and said when she saw him shake me off that she knew what was up as she used to have the same problem.
Coworker said he was with another coworker when it happened and he just sat there looking at him, like "WTF is wrong with you" while eating.
But yeah it was kinda scary and I definitely looked up some refreshers on choking and basic cpr.
I remember when a very very little kid probably 5 and my little brother choked on a sucker. I remember my dad was a sleep with me bro and mom in kitchen and him swallowing the sucker. Mom had to go wake up my dad and my dad was finally able to get out out by sticking his finger in his mouth to get it out. We were out in the country and at least 15 mins to a hospital, so that seemed pretty lucky.

I had a close call with a mozzarella cheese stick one time when I was little. I remember my grandmother putting the chair in front of me and beating that thing out as I was pulling hot cheese out

I knew a lady that had recovered from a stroke and was practically independent. The week after she was released from the hospital she choked and died at a Chinese buffett.

Back in elementary school ( good ole cedarcrest) Jennie Lou O'Neal choked on a coin that she had in her mouth. Teacher grabbed her and ran for help and they finally dislodged it.
Scared the hell out of kids and it was the thing that childhood school legends are made of. By the end of the day, kids were saying she had died because non kid saw her after she was carried out of the class. She didn't die but they had called her parents to come get her after the incident.
Interesting fact- caps for pens, like those used for some BIC pens have a little hole in the top to comply with the existing safety standards. Roughly 100 people die in the US each year from choking on pen lids, a number that used to be higher.
Supposedly that's why lifesaver candies have a hole in them also.

One of my kids choked on a piece of candy at my mil’s. She was probably 18 months old. My bil was walking past her when it happened. Before I could move from the couch, he swooped her up by her feet, whacked her on the back, and put her back down. It was over as fast as it started and we all got a great laugh. I’ve rarely seen something done so elegantly, but it could have been serious.

Yes, it happened to my friend's mother. And my mother in law came close, but someone gave her the heimlich maneuver and she lived another 20 years.
