Maybe he’s a dick? I know nothing of the man and I am not saying he is one but that or some scandal that hasn’t leaked are the only reasons I can see as to why they would fire him.

The frick? Any governor who thinks they need to be involved in the hiring and firing of a football coach at a school is completely unqualified. How the hell does this dude think this is something he should weigh in on?

That governor tells you to stay in your house and put your mask on.

Why shouldn’t he feel entitled enough to hire/fire football coaches?

I'm trying to imagine how our fanbase (or UofL's) would react if the Governor tried to pull some shite like that.

Frankfort would probably burn to the ground.

Can someone from West Virginia please explain how the Governor of the state is allowed to oust the head football coach of a university, short of said coach committing some sort of serious public employee violation?

I still remember Holliday getting emotional at his introductory press conference when Marshall hired him. The guy appeared to love that job, and won a lot of games, so this is bizarre.

I suppose if they're serious about jumping conferences, they could be trying to position themselves to hire a younger, hot name. But that should be the AD's call, not the a-hole governor's.

Who would even want them? The AAC already took schools like Tulsa, Tulane, SMU, and Wichita State over them and has been talking to Boise.

The only thing I could think that they could do is to form a new conference with the eastern football independents and then maybe try to pluck Buffalo from the MAC.

Even then, would a conference of Marshall, Army, Liberty, UMass, UConn, Buffalo and ??? really be better off financially than the current CUSA?

Maybe the governor is a West Virginia fan who wasn’t happy that Marshall is a better program.

The governor picks the board.

The board picks the university president.

The university president picks the athletic director (and AD contract probably voted on by board).

The AD picks the head football coach (and HC contract probably voted on by board.)

The quote from the coach said the contract was not extended. My guess is the governor told the board members, if you vote for an extension, you will be removed from the board.

No one in all likelihood, but there was a recent AP article on the MSB about the dire financial situation of C-USA, and Marshall being stuck on the sinking ship.

I know the AAC is already talking to Boise about football only membership, at least to start. But it's possible Marshall still thinks they have a prayer to be considered for full membership there, or that the MAC might take them back.

If I had to bet I would wager that this practice actually began in the Great State of Louisiana...

It is known fact that Huey Long controlled the HFC hiring/firing at LSU and is widely believed to have been a process continued by most subsequent Governors.

I'll say this, if Justice is going to insert himself into Marshall athletics like this he should be spending millions on upgrading their facilities and coaching salaries the way other mega rich people like with T Boone, Fertitta, and Falwell have all done at their schools.

Holliday will be coveted by sec and acc teams. Elite recruiter in Florida.

I hope he's on a plane to Gainesville as we speak to be ST coach or some other made up position.

He was safeties coach under Urban before Chuck Heater.

What are y’all talking about? It’s already been done before. Jindal made the call that saved Les when he was all but fired and it cost us Jimbo. It was his last FU to Louisiana before he left on top of all his other screwups that brought down the state.

Do you get this mad about being told you have to wear a seatbelt and carry insurance too? Or are you just selectively stupid? Or is this a troll that I fell for?

Well, like Sid above you mentioned, Huey Long used to do the same thing with LSU, but he was spending millions of taxpayer dollars upgrading their facilities and such.

Huey Long was never about to invest any of his own money...even the dollars he made by stealing from the taxpayers.

The fact he thanks the former president and not the current one sounds fishy. There's no way he would get fired based on performance.

This stood out to me, too. He opens with saying the university president has decided to not renew his contract then goes on to thank the previous president. Clash with the new president?
