The bowls used to be so much fun, and I could be wrong, but it seemed like they meant a lot to the teams too... and not just not the big name/ BCS bowls. I remember watching Iowa State and TCU go to war in a shitty December bowl game that you would have thought was the super bowl. It was unheard of to quit on your team... you showed up and balled out for your school.

When was the last time bowls were a big deal? The mid to late 2000’s? A couple years before the playoffs I started to notice a decline then the non-playoff bowls became all but meaningless

I mean, most of them never were relevant, but players weren’t quitters then. This started with guys like Fournette and McCaffrey. It’s snowballed big time since then.

Last year I really remember bowls being a big deal was like 2012-2013. Hype had fallen off a little before that however

Define relevant.

Relevant to you?

Relevant to the fans of the team in the bowl game?

Relevant to the meaning of life?

Isn't your question 100% subjective?

Most people would say even the so-called National Championship isn't relevant this year.

Probably 2013, the last year of the BCS. I remember how fun the A&M vs. Duke Chick-Fil-A Bowl was that year.

Probably pre-BCS when bowl games were rewards for good seasons. Being bowl eligible used to a real accomplishment. Now with all of the shite bowls being pumped out there by ESPN, they have diluted the product. The Playoff simply finished them off. I’m from Montgomery and there’s no reason that it should be hosting a bowl game but now it actually has 2 bowl games. WTF?

They really needs to cut down the number of bowls dramatically if they want to address this. Raise eligibility to 8 wins.

When there were a lot less bowl games, it meant something to be invited to one. Now you don’t even need a winning record to make it.

If I recall correctly, it started with guys buying insurance policies on themselves but they would still play. Now I’m afraid we are going to have guys skipping their JR year

I mean never? Not unless they involved teams in contention for a national title.

I don’t watch the NFL because it’s too political and they hate white conservative males.

I now won’t watch college football because those entitled scholarship athletes hate me too... and now they aren’t even fulfilling their obligation to a $100K free education while I had to pay for mine.

frick them all. I’ll worry about my family and they can worry about trying to figure out why scholarships are less because of lack of funding.

Win/win for me

Yeah, I get COVID year and it being and excuse, but this is nuts.

Haven't really watched or paid much attention to the details but tuned in for Florida/Oklahoma to see UF was playing with a practice squad.

Also tuned in to see Tulsa/MSU, really disappointed to see Tulsa's best guy opted out.

Aside from the traditional big match ups, Tulsa/MSU is a game that makes, or used to make bowls fun. To see that dude not playing along with others really makes it pointless. Feels like this could be the beginning of the end.

Just from my POV, I love college football, and on a day like today, I was willing to sit and watch Tulsa/MSU--teams I have not connection to, but didn't after I heard about the opt outs.

Yeah, UNC gets their first marquee bowl bid in 70 years and three of their best four skill guys opt out and arguably their best defensive player opts out.

I get it but the money for these kids is too big. IMO that’s what made the bowls irrelevant.

For a mid tier team like UNC that will never make the playoff what’s stopping the guys from opting out of the regular season non conference games against I-AA teams in the future?

This is what is coming. We're going to see guys who have freshman seasons like Clowney or Adrian Peterson quit college football and "train for the draft" for two years.

MSU was 3-7. That was the type of matchup that made everybody say there's too many bowl games.

This is why attendance and attention to pro sports is waning. They have completely forgotten who their core audience was.

I remember the days fans and players were excited about going to even minor small bowl games. It started changing when there became so many of them obviously.

I really only care about LSU. So , for me, I enjoyed the 2006 Sugar Bowl and 2018 Fiesta Bowl.
