Virginia removes a statue of man who chose it over his country.

I know reading can be tough, but the article says they moved it from the U.S. Capitol
And while I'm no supporter of rewriting history/removing statues/renaming places/etc..., that's admittedly a strange statue to have in the U.S. Capitol.

Robert E. Lee chose the South just because Virginia did. He was a Virginian first.
So they're blaming him for defending a decisions the state made.

Great Americans like Lincoln, Grant, Joshua Chamberlain, etc. would look at someone like you with complete and utter disgust.

I’m sure that ended racism

Does anyone honestly care about the statue shite? I mean really care, like “damn I was going to make a trip to Virginia to look at the statue but now I can’t”, or on the other side “I just can’t bare living here because of a statue, it ruins my life.” Things like this are just a distraction from real issues for the most part.

Iconoclasts are simpletons.

Pretty much this.
I am by no means a Confederate apologist but I am a historian whose preferential area of study is the American Civil War. This idea of American Nationalism is a post-Civil War phenomenon. In 1860, the only interaction Americans had with the federal government was the post office. The only time they'd see an American flag waving in the breeze is when they were passing by a federal court house or a U.S. military installation.
The vast majority of people who lived in the United States during this period considered themselves Virginians or New Yorkers first and Americans second. At that particular point in time, it was a common held belief that the United States of America was a collection of independent nations held together and loosely regulated by a central government in Washington, D.C.

This country is starting to have more in common with the Taliban than any other Western Hemisphere country.
It is sad that we are a country of hurt feelings now.

And, as of today, not the only traitor in need of removal from that august seat of democracy.

That’s like saying someone stole all of your wealth but you’re not bothered because you never cared what dollars looked like.
It’s not about the statue.

Finally, all our problems have been solved. Praise Governor Coonman!

Lee was loyal to Virginia. Not the union or Confederacy.

But the President who trampled the Constitution, civil and states rights and only decided to free slaves when it looked like he needed a morale boost, he's cool, right?
