Omi Chinese Restaurant

Omi is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant in Baton Rouge. Some friends picked up from there on Saturday and said they had a huge For Sale sign in front of the restaurant. Very sad if this is true. I hate to see them go.

if true my guess would be they struggle price wise in a city that believes the menu picture places are what Chinese food is and should cost

When I had work in BR, I'd go there for lunch at least once each week I was there. I loved it, but it was almost always completely empty except for our table and I never understood why.

Check out Nine Dragon Noodle House next to the Walmart Market Highland and Lee (not Nine Dragon on Burbank). Ive had some bad meals at Omi and some fantastic one. Nine Dragon Noodle House is consistently very good and like Omi is a cut above you average strip mall take out.

I hope that isn't the case. I was worried when they closed these multiple times for COVID. I wish they'd find a nice building in Ascension parish and set up shop.
The other good one is Lee's Asian Fusion up north of Denham Springs. I thought Nine Dragon Noodle was good, but not of Omi or Lee's sichuan quality.

I loved Omi, but I don't think most people even knew it existed unfortunately. I really don't think they were always dead because BR people wouldn't like the food, and I think they would probably do well opening a more takeout style concept but with their recipes.
I think that when people go to a sit-down dinner they're factoring in the atmosphere to a certain degree. There's a reason Merchant/DiGuilio's/Superior are packed to the gills night after night. Sadly, an authentic but otherwise quiet Chinese spot isn't going to pack the house on a Friday night.

That building has been for sale for years.

Wasn’t it a Vincent’s of New Orleans and also a Mexican restaurant years ago?

No, it used to be Louisiana Pizza Kitchen, then it was several ethnic restaurants under the same owner, Mexican may have been one of those iterations and maybe Italian.

Before or after LPK it was Vincent’s. I’m not exactly sure when though.

I remember Vincent’s being where Superior Grill is today on Highland Rd.

Damn, I remember Arzi's and Monjuni's but clearly I'm too young for Vincent's

It closed ~2007. Vincent’s and Mandina's came to Baton Rouge after Katrina and each lasted a little over a year. Mandina's was in the old Chalet Brandt (now Velvet Cactus).

I asked the guy in my office from Guangzhou where he would go for Chinese food. He said Omi, so that's where I go.

Is that what moved to Government by the name "Brandt's Maisonette"? Then became Studio C? Next to what is now the beer garden?

Yep same Brandt.
ETA Maybe I’m mistaken about Vincent’s being where Omi is.
