I’m not a deer hunter and I don’t have much interest chasing deer. But, My 13 yo wants to try his hand at deer hunting and I have access to land to hunt.

I don’t own a rifle.

What rifle would the OB recommend? I’d like to find one that he could use into adulthood.

My 13 y.o. asked for the same thing.

We have a safe full of rifles, but he wants his own. Bravo to him.

My BIL is a dealer, and my nephew was one of the country’s top ranked shooters when he was in HS. Here’s what advice was given today:

Winchester XPR
Howa
Ruger American
Mossberg Patriot
CVA Cascade
Thompson Center Compass
Weatherby Vanguard

All in 7mm-08

We’ll probably put a Meopta scope on it.

Remember- the gun is only as good as the glass. Spend more than you think you need on the glass.

Need to know your budget. Ruger American is hard to beat for a cheaper option. I have some
really expensive deer rifles but never hesitate to grab my Ruger ranch to hunt with. I think it was less that $400.

Browning X-Bolt .308 Stainless Stalker and a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40mm. This combo will last him a lifetime.

A slightly lower-priced option would be a Weatherby Vanguard .308 and a Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40mm.

I get laughed at every time i pull out the ole .243 at deer camp.... i have and hunt with other calibers but that sucker is bang flop all day every day. That is all the gun he needs! Other options are 25-06, 7mm08, .260, 308 and 257 roberts. Find ammo them buy the gun lol, good luck finding 308 ammo right now.

You can get a Savage Axis with a scope from Academy for $329. Either 308, 243, 6.5 creedmoor, or 270. Get that gun in any of those calibers and your son will be set. That’s my advice. Use the savings on ammo.

Take son to a gun shop and see what feels good in HIS hands.
Also, a 13 year old needs some direction in deer hunting. I think you just became interested in taking it up.

Weatherby Vanguard S2 or Savage Axis II XP (you want the accutrigger). I've had both for years and they have been equally great. Weatherby fit and finish is better. Savage price is better and comes with a serviceable scope. Accuracy is equally good on both at sub MOA.

It's also worth noting that Howa make the Vanguard S2 for Weatherby. The Vanguard S2 is essentially a Howa 1500 with a different stock.

Luckily there are quite a number of great options that won't break the bank but will provide a lifetime of service and reliability. Those are the 2 that I own and am most familiar with, and I can confidently recommend either one depending on your budget.

I built a .224 Valkyrie for my son when he was 11. He is 13 now and starting to use my Savage 10FCP-SR in 6.5 Creedmoor. We take the creedmoor when we are hunting 200 yds plus. He still like the .224 on 60-70 yard shots. Amazing finding .224 ammo is pretty easy these days. It is very comparable to a .243.

Savage Axis combo with a scope in just about any standard calibre you can think of is a great buy. Usually around $320-$350.

I like .25-06. Can't go wrong with .30-06.
