Deer rifle for my son ?

I’m not a deer hunter and I don’t have much interest chasing deer. But, My 13 yo wants to try his hand at deer hunting and I have access to land to hunt.
I don’t own a rifle.
What rifle would the OB recommend? I’d like to find one that he could use into adulthood.

Savage or ruger .243, 7mm-08mm , is all the deer gun he will ever need

My 13 y.o. asked for the same thing.
We have a safe full of rifles, but he wants his own. Bravo to him.
My BIL is a dealer, and my nephew was one of the country’s top ranked shooters when he was in HS. Here’s what advice was given today:
Winchester XPR
Howa
Ruger American
Mossberg Patriot
CVA Cascade
Thompson Center Compass
Weatherby Vanguard
All in 7mm-08
We’ll probably put a Meopta scope on it.
Remember- the gun is only as good as the glass. Spend more than you think you need on the glass.

Need to know your budget. Ruger American is hard to beat for a cheaper option. I have some
really expensive deer rifles but never hesitate to grab my Ruger ranch to hunt with. I think it was less that $400.

$$$ are important $500ish with scope? I could spend more or less and be ok with that.
Thanks for all of the suggestions, maybe we’ll have some different meat in the freEzer soon.

Browning X-Bolt .308 Stainless Stalker and a Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40mm. This combo will last him a lifetime.
A slightly lower-priced option would be a Weatherby Vanguard .308 and a Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40mm.

Remington Model 7 youth in 7mm-08 is the perfect deer rifle.

I get laughed at every time i pull out the ole .243 at deer camp.... i have and hunt with other calibers but that sucker is bang flop all day every day. That is all the gun he needs! Other options are 25-06, 7mm08, .260, 308 and 257 roberts. Find ammo them buy the gun lol, good luck finding 308 ammo right now.

Same story here for the most part, have a few options to use including.308,30-06, .243, 6.5 Grendel. Almost always grab the Ruger Ranch in 300BLK. It so damn light and small. I bought it for my son when he turned 10 and I use it as much as he does. 6.5 Grendel is another great option but I would only go that route in an AR not a bolt. That’s the one I use 2nd most. It’s a laser with no kick.

You can get a Savage Axis with a scope from Academy for $329. Either 308, 243, 6.5 creedmoor, or 270. Get that gun in any of those calibers and your son will be set. That’s my advice. Use the savings on ammo.

Take son to a gun shop and see what feels good in HIS hands.
Also, a 13 year old needs some direction in deer hunting. I think you just became interested in taking it up.

Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 bolt action.
Will last forever and will shoot the wings off a fly. $500-ish at Academy Sports and comes in all mid-level deer calibers.

Don't listen to what anyone tells you negative about a 243. It's a deer slaying machine.
It has zero kick, explodes into a deer and ammo/reloading is widely available.
If you want something with a little more range, get a 25-06. Both of those rounds are absolute screamers.
I also agree that the Savage Axis is a phenomenal deal for $350-ish. That way, you can invest the extra in a decent scope and ammo. But you just can't hardly beat a Weatherby for accuracy.

Weatherby Vanguard S2 or Savage Axis II XP (you want the accutrigger). I've had both for years and they have been equally great. Weatherby fit and finish is better. Savage price is better and comes with a serviceable scope. Accuracy is equally good on both at sub MOA.
It's also worth noting that Howa make the Vanguard S2 for Weatherby. The Vanguard S2 is essentially a Howa 1500 with a different stock.
Luckily there are quite a number of great options that won't break the bank but will provide a lifetime of service and reliability. Those are the 2 that I own and am most familiar with, and I can confidently recommend either one depending on your budget.

Get him a .243, all the gun you need on the southeast.

Get him a .243,
The kids near old enough to play high school football.
Get him a .30-06. Decide the budget and pick just about any rifle off the shelf that he likes, they all shoot well these days. He'll be covered for anything in North America for the rest of his life if he so chooses.
