Why is eating bass frowned upon?

I personally think that bass are some of the tastiest swimming fish, especially in Louisiana? Why do fisherman (especially yankees) frown upon harvesting bass? I don't keep bass over two pounds. The one pound marsh bass are tastier than speckled trout IMO.
Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Catch and release tournaments on TV is the only thing I can think of.

Bill Dance, Roland Martin, Hank Parker, and Orlando Wilson banged this into our young impressionable heads when we were growing up.
I agree small bass are about as good as it gets. Too many crappie in my lake to bother with them though, if the crappie ever get hard to catch, I intend to get into the small bass frying business.

I don’t think this particular practice is frowned upon. Most people frown on eating a trophy fish.
I personally have a self imposed slot limit on bass. Only keep them between 12-17”, with few exceptions (Gill or gut hooked, for example.)
ETA: Bob Lusk really helped shape my view on keeping bass. Very informative video if you have the time.

This is not an opinion everyone shares. There’s a lot of really good tasting fish and I wouldn’t put bass that high on the list. Due to overpopulated ponds I eat bass pretty regularly so it’s not for lack of trying, I just don’t think it compares to bream or sacs. Maybe marsh bass are different.

Not only that but those huge egg sacks are tasty fried up too.

Absolutely! I think the brackish (salt) water changes the taste versus a true freshwater bass.

Is this a Louisiana thing? I live in NW Florida and pretty much everybody who freshwater fishes eats bass.

I smile upon it.
I eat every one I catch.

I eat bass just not over around 3lbs.
IMO: No reason to kill a big female.

But yet everyone seems to think if we let every 4pt deer walk it will be a booner, and the only deer to shoot is a mature buck.
So hard to keep track of what everyone thinks I should be doing...

I think you should do whatever you want as long as it’s legal.

I eat them, especially if I only get to go once or twice in the spring:

It isn't. Bass are delicious and people are stupid.

I eat bass all the time. Great fish. The big ones don't get nasty big specs.
If a fishery has a limit it's because folks smarter than me determined that it could support folks keeping fish.

I don't think they are that great....not as good as crappie anyway and crappier are far more prolific breeders.
I release a lot of crappie also. I try to fish mostly plastics for crappie and they are as easy to release and hearty as bass. If I am live bait fishing though and they swallow the hook or are gill hooked I keep them.
