If you have a 30-06, its fine for Elk. Hell I know people who take Moose with it.
Pick your favorite round and go with it. Unless it's terribly undersized or oversized, you'll have no issue. Most deer rounds will be fine for Elk.
Ethically most people don't shoot at a distance to where an smaller round will matter anyway. I know people who have taken them with .243.

You downvoters want to expand on what you have against a 270? If he doesn't want to get a magnum and has a 3006 it is the next best option.

7 mag, 300 WBY, 300 WIN, 300 WSM, 30-06 for elk.

It's the smallest I would go with but plenty of people have killed elk and continue to hunt elk with 270s.
I would take it over a 308, the 270 with 130g bullet has better ballistics than any combo you can get in a 308. Velocity and Energy.
But I agree, he should go with a magnum if it is going to be a "elk" gun.
300 weatherby here.

I was told here my .300 win and 150s are no good for deer. I never noticed so far, but....
I dug up some 180s I have in my stash.

I wouldn't recommend on a WT at 100yrds but that combination is great for mule and longer ranges.

I’ve killed 3 with a 7 mag. That’s all I’ve got

I shoot 7mm rem mag 150s and they are pushed at almost the same velocities as the 300rm.
I have killed a shite pile of deer( 308-7mmRM,270) shooting 150s. The key is using premium bullets either bonded/partion/solid.

If his goal is to find a lighter rifle then there are plenty of better options over the 270. The 270 is a great round, but it’s naturally going to result in a heavier gun.

My 270 weighs 5.75 lbs. How light do you want?
Posted on 11/27/20 at 10:16 pm to GREENHEAD22
All I have are soft point 150s and 180s, and .308 powder level 150s
It feels dumb not to shoot full power when all I care about is them not crossing my property line.

I'm a Tikka fanboy if there ever was one. But keep in mind they don't make a short action, so if you are going .308for a short and lighter rifke, you're not getting it out of a Tikka. Still would recommend it though.
We don't know budget range but off the cuff a Tikka .30-06 would be my choice so I can shoot a heavier bullet if I so chose
If you just want a magnum, which I would never argue against if it's a dedicated elk gun, go .300 win mag

With all due respect to his dad or whomever gave it to him, my 7600 doesn't hold a candle in accurate to today's bolts. 2+ in groups vs .75 in the Tikka. Not a hard choice for me unless I know I'm shooting pretty close.

I dont have anything against it, but I wouldn't go buy an elk rifle in .270
.30-06 is a great elk caliber with 180gr premium bullets. If I had one, I'd use it without reservation. Same with the. 270. If I was going buy one, .338 win mag is the answer if you can't handle .375 recoil

Any deer rifle will do the job, know your limits if you don’t have the juice and shoot premium bonded ammo. If i was leaving tomorrow, i’d carry my 35 whelen with 225 accubonds or my 308 with partitions.

My old man's 7600 .270 shoots anything you can feed it under an inch at 100. Id put it against any bolt rifle custom or otherwise.

Interesting. I've shot several and couldn't get any to group worth a damn.
Now the 7400 has come in handy for follow ups a couple of times.

Its amazing how this works. I haven't shot a pump remington that wasn't a MOA rifle. I've shot 3 of them at paper that I can remember

I understand that however he said light and 308 which led me to say the 270 if he doesn't want a magnum.
