Everybody I know who uses a 7 mag for elk is using a factory rifle and they shoot 175gr factory loads.
I didn't think those 9.5 twists would work with 175s. Good to know.
I have an old Remington 700 in 270 that I'm debating on semi custom 270 or 7mm Rem mag. The grooves are just about gone in the barrel. I don't know what I'll do yet. There are some nice rifles I'd like to buy in 7mm.

Idk how good they shoot them but evidently its good enough. That's definitely what I would want for elk with a 7 mag and probably what I would use for everything.
Going to 7mag is going to require a new bolt or having the bolt face opened up. If you want an elk gun from it .35 whelen would be a really good choice or 9.3x62 which would both be just a barrel swap and maybe some feed lip work.

Send to LRI and have them blue print it. If you’re wanting to go from .270 to any mag the bolt face will need to be enlarged the can do that and also add a second ejector.
It will need a new finish after that which they can cerakote there or you can have it done locally.
Then just order a new barrel. If you order a remage style barrel you can easily install yourself. You need a barrel nut, action wrench, and a go and no go headspace gage.

Another plunger? What about a M16 style extractor? The extractor on a 700 is really the only thing I kinda don't like

Dual ejectors
You can get an m16/ar-15 extractor installed on the bolt as well if you wish.

The 7 mag. ends up wounding a lot of big game animals and here is why……………the typical 140gr. bullet is doing around 3200 fps at the muzzle, so if you fail to choose a tough controlled expansion bullet design, the softer bullets tend to over-expand or rupture and not penetrate deeply enough
I have only had the opportunity to hunt elk one time on a Wyoming cow license.
Remington 700 factory 7MM mag. 140gr Remington Core-lock @436 yards broadside. (Rifle zeroed at 325 yards)
Bullet penetrated behind right front elbow, took 2 ribs (1 in & 1 out), 2 lungs, and stopped just under the hide on the far side having spent all of it's energy.
She trotted about 20 steps, paused, and dropped.
I'm satisfied that is is quite adequate for the purpose.
Later that fall I took my best all time whitetail buck here on the farm at 500+ yards, but it wasn't a perfect shot as he was running quartering away. He went about 80 yards before he laid down.

Personally my favorite elk rife is my .338 Win Mag. I’ve also shot several with a .300 Win Mag that did the job. I have watched about a dozen or so other elk get shot with a .270 win, .30-06, 7mm REM Mag, .300 RUM, .338-378 Weatherby. And I’m probably forgetting a few calibers. Point is they all will kill an elk but I prefer the magnums so you can take that hard quartering shot or shoulder shot on that elk of a life time if he shows up and be confident it will be an ethical shot to take. My advice is tote the biggest caliber (within reason, I’m not talking about a 600 NE) that you can shoot accurately with out flinching. Also, use a quality bullet and it might take some experimenting. My .388 only likes 225 Grain or heavier and it cost me a few hundred dollars of Ammo to figure this out.

Whats your favorite load for it?
Posted on 11/29/20 at 8:14 pm to DownshiftAndFloorIt
I shoot 225 gr accubonds
Posted on 11/29/20 at 8:15 pm to LimbHangger81
Sweet. I'm shooting 230gr norma oryx. I bought some 250 accubonds to handload, but the damn thing loves the norma load so much I might not ever load these.

Tikka in 300 Winchester magnum.
A magnum for elk is the safer choice than a .308.

Killed 3 with 1 shot a 7 mag 160 Federal nosier partition. That’s all I got.

I think he's saying he's killed 3 elk with one shot each. not 1 shot total.

Cows? Calves? Giant Bulls of a lifetime?

Ah, excuse my cloudy thinking this morning, just now drinking my coffee. I was thinking 3 in 1 shot, like happens with a group of pigs. I apologize for temporary dumbass moment.

You don't need a cannon to kill an Elk. Most guys think you need a 300 to kill hill country whitetail. My son shot a bull last week with a my 7 mag. 150 yard shot. 150 grain bullet. The Elk had a softball side hole on the off side. I recently had a custom 300wm built for Elk hunting in the mountains. Before glass the gun weighed 6.5 lbs. She kicks like a mule but I've never felt recoil when shooting an animal.
Unless you just want an excuse to buy a new rifle the 308 will kill anything you shoot at..

I ended up with a Savage 110 in 300WM for next year's elk season. Went with the 300WM in case I decided to go for moose or bear as well. Will report any results next season
